About The Position

The Assistant Football Coach supervises student-athletes as assigned by the head coach, adhering to Gadsden Independent School District's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include promoting sports participation, treating student-athletes professionally, and maintaining loyalty to the school and Head Coach. The role emphasizes competitiveness, character development, and academic success for student-athletes, while also enforcing the "Code of Ethics" and teaching sportsmanship. The coach must maintain open communication with participants, staff, and parents, and adhere to all district and state rules and guidelines. This position also involves program development, including youth programs and supporting the high school team's philosophy, strategies, and coaching methods. Management functions include securing facilities, supervising locker rooms, ensuring proper use of uniforms and equipment, and complying with fundraising guidelines.

Requirements

  • Must complete the New Mexico Activities Association’s online course requirements for coaching.
  • Valid New Mexico coaching license
  • CPR Certified
  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for performing the responsibilities listed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises student-athletes as assigned by the head coach in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Adheres to the Gadsden Independent School District rules, regulations, and Athletic Philosophy.
  • Promotes and encourages students to participate in sports.
  • Treats student-athletes in a professional manner in conjunction with the athletic coordinator and principal.
  • Is loyal to the school and Head Coach.
  • Assists Head Coach with developing a competitive program that will excel in athletic performance, classroom achievement, and community expectations.
  • Creates an environment whereby athletes can achieve academic and athletic success.
  • Ensures athletes are given every opportunity to achieve competitive success.
  • Monitors academic performance to ensure student-athlete academic success.
  • Enforces the “Code of Ethics” for all athletes.
  • Teaches sportsmanship and sets an example of good moral and physical behavior.
  • Assumes responsibility for the conduct and well-being of all players.
  • Conducts self in a manner, both on and off the field that will bring credit to yourself, your team, and your school.
  • Develops an open-line of communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Is loyal and trustworthy to the student athletes, team, head coach, school, and Gadsden Independent School District Rules and Guidelines.
  • Is familiar with and follows the policies and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and the New Mexico Activities Association.
  • Knows district and state eligibility and transfer rules and follows them to the letter.
  • Ensures that an athlete does not participate until the head coach has the “Green” Clearance form RANKONE.
  • Reports inappropriate behavior of any athletic personnel or participant to the Principal and Athletic Coordinator.
  • Attends professional meetings and clinics as required.
  • Works continually with the Principal, Athletic Director, Athletic Coordinator, and Head Coach to upgrade the total athletic program.
  • Cooperates with and is responsive to the needs of the Head Coach and other coaches and their athletic programs.
  • Encourages athletes to participate in other sports.
  • Participates in end of school and summer youth programs for younger kids to provide them an opportunity to become involved in athletics as appropriate.
  • Promotes and supports athletic programs that involve middle school and elementary school students.
  • Works with and supports the high school program and head coach.
  • Ensures offensive and defensive strategies align with the high school’s philosophy.
  • Adheres to, supports, and provides input according to the direction of the Head Coach.
  • Instructs participants in safety-related issues and the need for reporting injuries to the coach.
  • Implements coaching strategies that represent technical knowledge and reflect the ability to create, utilize or react to different game situations.
  • Uses coaching methods and techniques that represent an up-to-date philosophy, the ability to analyze and correct errors, and the employment of sound teaching skills and techniques.
  • Is innovative in using new coaching techniques and ideas.
  • Secures facilities after use (locker room, equipment room, showers, lights, building, etc.).
  • Supervises the locker room before and after each practice until all players have left.
  • Assures that school-purchased uniforms and equipment are used only for athletic contests, school practices, and games.
  • Follows the Gadsden Independent School District guidelines for fundraising.
  • Agrees to fulfill performance responsibilities in assigned location(s).
  • Complies with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Performs such other tasks as may be assigned within the parameters of the job analysis.
