About The Position

Joining our Facility Services team, the Assistant Electrician will be responsible for the following: Install, maintain, modify and repair all electrical wiring, control, and lighting systems and associated electrical equipment Remain in compliance with state and local building regulations along with current National Electric Code Inspect and test components of electrical systems Conduct and maintain records from routine inspections Use of hand tools and power tools Run computer cables, connect computer jacks and plugs and test for adequate operation Utilize blueprints, wiring diagrams and manufacturer's installation manuals to complete assigned projects. Complete all work requests document time, materials and detail description of work. Install and maintain wiring, control, and lighting systems Work collaboratively and professionally with all co-workers and members of the campus community. Observe all safety regulations and wear protective gear whenever required. As of 8/1/2025 ability to provide own hand tools for the purposes of completing assigned work Normal work week is forty (40) hours Monday-Friday with a 30-minute unpaid lunch, but the ability to work extended hours and weekends to respond to emergencies and meet deadlines is required. Ability to periodically respond to campus emergencies during off hours. Considered essential personnel/responder - which means that this position may be needed when the University is closed or in emergency situations as determined by the supervisor. A valid New York State driver's license is required that satisfies both university and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a university motor vehicle. Any other requested duties to assist Facility Services operations, these may be outside of typical electrical work. Such duties include assisting with buildings and grounds, snow removal maintenance etc. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required or Vocational Certification or Associate degree in electrical field preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in the electrical trade
  • Self-motivated, able to identify work needing to be done and address it or if unable to address bring to supervisor's attention
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skills for electrical installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Computer Skills
  • Usually standing but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching.
  • Heavy lifting, ability to lift and carry up to fifty pounds on a regular basis and up to sixty pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Climbing ladders, walking, carrying and other movements may be required.
  • Under special circumstances, protective equipment and garb may be required.
  • Tasks involving maintenance work involve extensive wrist and hand movement.
  • All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
