About The Position

The Assistant Editor will support the editorial work of the Product Development department, ensuring that editorial projects are prioritized and completed on time and with excellence. This role involves managing various editorial projects, including assessing new project viability, supporting the development of magazine crafts and recipes, developing assigned book and subscription projects, conducting asset research, editing, copywriting, scheduling, and other editorial tasks. The Assistant Editor will independently develop assigned series books or projects and maintain departmental forms, reports, and record keeping. Additionally, they will support the kids mail process by organizing and recommending submissions and responding to them, as well as writing revision or rejection letters to authors and agents. This role also includes assuming responsibility for assigned editorial aspects of book development, collaborating with art directors and designers for illustrations, copywriting for marketing materials, preparing presentations for editorial meetings, and coordinating with design, production, and marketing departments to meet scheduling requirements. A key aspect of this role is staying informed about current trends in children's book publishing and product development.

Requirements

  • 2+ years’ experience in a related role working with or developing content for children
  • Excellent editorial skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of children’s book and magazine/subscription product industry
  • Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Suite with ability to learn our existing software
  • Excellent organizational skills and project management.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage a large workload in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Support the editorial work of the department to ensure individual editorial projects and ongoing department work is prioritized and completed on time and with excellence.
  • Manage various editorial projects as assigned by or in collaboration with editorial leadership, including assessment of viability of new projects, supporting development of magazine crafts & recipes, development of assigned projects for books and subscriptions, asset research in our Digital Asset Management system, editing, copy writing, scheduling, and other editorial tasks.
  • Independently develop series books or projects assigned by editorial leadership.
  • Maintain and support departmental forms, reports, and record keeping, as assigned.
  • Support the work of the kids mail process by organizing and recommending submissions and responding.
  • Support senior editorial management in day-to-day work to keep the products moving to completion.
  • Support kids mail process by downloading, sorting, and recommending inclusion of kids’ submission.
  • Write revision and/or rejection letters to authors and agents of submitted projects.
  • Assume responsibility for assigned editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript development and editing; partner with art director and designers to provide illustration; copywriting including cover, tip sheets, and other marketing copy as required.
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations for editorial meetings.
  • Collaborate with design, production, and marketing departments to meet scheduling requirements.
  • Pursue knowledge of current trends in children’s book publishing and product.
