About The Position

The Assistant Division Commander serves as a key member of the Washington State Patrol's Firearms Background Division, Senior Management Team, providing strategic and operational leadership over the Division's Operations units. The position exists to ensure the efficient, accurate, and lawful administration of firearm eligibility background checks, the release of firearms from law enforcement safekeeping, and the certification and entry of firearm eligibility data. The Assistant Division Commander shares in the leadership of long-range strategic planning, fiscal management, hiring, and stakeholder engagement, and acts with full authority in the absence of the Division Commander.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
  • Four years of supervisory or managerial experience in program or line management within a criminal justice agency
  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, leadership and mentorship to the Program Specialist 5 positions.
  • Develop procedures and policies to accomplish division goals and objectives.
  • Assist with the development and submission of budget documents including funding requests, resource justification, and spending plan allotments.
  • Prepare correspondence on behalf of the Division Commander.
  • Assist with the management of the departmental training and auditing program.
  • Liaison with the FBI and the ATF regarding firearm regulations, policies, rulings, and practical implementations.
  • Prepare bill reviews and attend legislative hearings and meetings regarding firearm background checks.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, customers, state agencies, and federal agencies to create technology and business improvements.
  • Submit budget proposals and grant requests.
