About The Position

The Assistant District Attorney assigned to the Community Prosecutor position will be responsible for overseeing each of the specialty treatment courts operating in Lancaster County, to include Veterans' Court, Drug Treatment Court and Mental Health Court. These duties include processing all applications and reviewing applicants for eligibility and disqualifying criteria and participating in weekly team meetings representing the District Attorney's Office. The ADA will collaborate with the specialty treatment court teams to review and update policies and procedures to ensure compliance with evidenced-based best practices in accordance with the law. The ADA will also attend each scheduled weekly Court session to handle all guilty pleas and sentencings occurring within the treatment courts as well as observe and participate in participant reports to the Court. The Community Prosecutor will also be responsible for attending community meetings and talking with neighborhood leaders, residents, and other stakeholders to determine issues and priorities, and linking the community with prosecution and law enforcement to address specific issues. The Community Prosecutor will assist with current community-based programs in the office, such as, the Lancaster County Reentry Coalition, Prison Population Reduction Committee and the Mental Illness Substance Abuse Committee. The Community Prosecutor will also oversee the Pathways to Recovery diversion program at the Magisterial District Judge level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Juris Doctorate
  • Admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of PA
  • Knowledge in PA criminal prosecution and practice.
  • Ability to work well with other stakeholders in the criminal justice system as well as municipal and community leaders and residents.
  • Must be an effective public speaker and be creative, innovative and motivated in addressing criminal issues and current crime trends affecting Lancaster County communities.
  • Licensed to Practice Law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Responsibilities

  • Participate in each Treatment Court to include Drug Court, Veterans Court and Mental Health Court, duties include processing applications, weekly participation in each Court and preparing guilty pleas, probation/parole violations, sanctions hearings and sentencings.
  • Review policies and procedures for each Court, including legal documents, and collaborate with team members to update where necessary.
  • Attend community meetings
  • Participate in Stepping Up Stakeholders Meeting, Lancaster County Reentry Coalition, Prison Population Reduction Committee, Campaign Against Sexual Exploitation (CASE) and Mental Illness Substance Abuse Committee.
  • Oversight of Pathways to Recovery diversion program at MDJ level
  • Prepare and file motions to revoke ARD of non-compliant participants
  • Other general prosecution tasks/duties
  • Perform other Assistant District Attorney duties and calendar assignments as assigned and as needed.
