About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Operations serves as the lead operations and facilities administrator for the Mashouf Wellness Center and supports operational oversight of additional campus recreation facilities, including the Gymnasium and outdoor recreation spaces. The position provides leadership and administrative oversight for facility operations, risk management, sustainability initiatives, assessment practices, space utilization, and operational planning in support of Campus Recreation programs and services. As a member of the Campus Recreation leadership team, the incumbent is responsible for personnel management, operational planning, budget oversight, facility coordination, and the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures. The position supervises professional and student staff supporting facilities management, operations, memberships, reservations, marketing, and outreach functions. The Assistant Director of Operations collaborates with campus departments, external partners, and vendors to support safe, efficient, and student-centered recreation operations aligned with the mission and strategic priorities of San Francisco State University, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, the Division of Student Life, and Campus Recreation.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Administration, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in recreation operations, facilities management, student affairs, athletics, event operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of facility operations, maintenance coordination, risk management, safety compliance, and operational practices within a recreation, sports, higher education, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating operational programs, projects, services, or initiatives in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and operational standards.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and personnel management experience, including recruitment, training, scheduling, performance management, and employee development.
  • Working knowledge of NIRSA Strategic Values and Core Competencies and their application within collegiate recreation operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully in a culturally diverse and inclusive.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise professional and student staff supporting recreation facility operations and services.
  • Manage personnel-related functions including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, performance management, employee engagement, corrective action, and separation processes in accordance with University, CSU, and collective bargaining policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and operational oversight to staff supporting facilities management, memberships, reservations, customer service, outreach, and daily operations.
  • Develop and implement staff training, operational procedures, and professional development initiatives to support effective operations, risk management, and customer service standards.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and campus partners regarding personnel administration, labor relations matters, operational risk management, and workplace practices impacting departmental operations.
  • Promote an inclusive, collaborative, and service-oriented work environment.
  • Manage operational and expense budgets for functional areas within the Mashouf Wellness Center and assigned recreation facilities.
  • Coordinate capital improvement projects, facility repairs, renovations, and operational enhancement initiatives in collaboration with Facilities Services and campus partners.
  • Oversee procurement, purchasing, and contract coordination related to facility operations, equipment, supplies, and operational resources.
  • Monitor expenditures and support long-range operational planning to ensure efficient and sustainable use of departmental resources.
  • Research and recommend fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable operational practices, products, and equipment.
  • Provide operational oversight for the Mashouf Wellness Center and associated campus recreation facilities, including indoor and outdoor recreation spaces.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance activities for recreation and fitness equipment in collaboration with Facilities Services, vendors, and maintenance personnel.
  • Serve as liaison with Facilities Services, campus departments, external partners, vendors, and regulatory entities regarding facility operations, maintenance coordination, operational improvements, access needs, and operational compliance requirements.
  • Oversee operational logistics including equipment management, inventory control, facility access, space utilization, event support, and facility readiness.
  • Monitor facility conditions and coordinate repair, replacement, and maintenance of operational equipment, furnishings, and recreation assets.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational policies, procedures, and standard operating practices to support safe, effective, and efficient facility operations.
  • Coordinate operational technology and audio-visual support for departmental programs, meetings, and events as needed.
  • Support operational planning and coordination for programs, events, external partnerships, facility usage activities, and large-scale recreation operations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor risk management and safety practices for recreation facilities, programs, and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, CSU, and University safety regulations, policies, operational standards, and risk management practices.
  • Participate in University emergency preparedness, emergency operations, and safety committee activities.
  • Assist in coordinating departmental emergency response operations and serve as a departmental liaison during emergency preparedness activities and facility-related incidents.
  • Oversee operational compliance related to recreation equipment, climbing wall operations, inspections, permits, certifications, and safety requirements.
  • Support sustainability initiatives and operational practices aligned with departmental and campus sustainability goals and LEED standards.
  • Collaborate with marketing and outreach staff to support communication of departmental programs, operations, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Support and coordinate operational communications related to facility operations, recreation programs, events, website content, and departmental services to ensure information is accurate, current, and aligned with University communication standards.
  • Support assessment, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives related to recreation operations, facility effectiveness, and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to support student engagement, facility operations, and departmental strategic initiatives.
