About The Position

The CSUDH Health & Well-Being cluster takes a holistic approach to care and offers a variety of resources to the CSUDH community to help students thrive while they pursue their academic success. Under the general direction of the Director of the Health, Wellness and Recreation Center (HWRC), the Assistant Director of Operations & Recreation Programs provides leadership and supervision for the Center's day-to-day operations, hospitality and guest experience, facility logistics and scheduling, event oversight, and recreation programming across all HWRC indoor and outdoor spaces. This role works collaboratively with the HWRC Assistant Director of Aquatics and Fitness to optimize programmable spaces and with University Facility Operations to maintain facility maintenance and custodial needs. The position plays an integral role in promoting an integrated model of health and well being, advancing student development, and supporting revenue-generating programming within the Health, Wellness & Recreation Center (HWRC), opening in 2026. In collaboration with a dynamic support team, the Assistant Director maintains operational excellence while advancing and engaging, welcoming, student-centered, and well-coordinated holistic wellness environment at the HWRC. This position requires a flexible schedule as events dictate. Some weekends and evenings required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 or more years of relevant work experience in recreation, hospitality or equivalent field.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervision experience required.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of and lead a team that collaborates effectively with colleagues.
  • Ability to write concise, logical reports.
  • Knowledge of standard practices in recreational sports and aquatics.
  • Knowledge of standard practices in youth programming and/or youth camps.

  • Certified Pool Operator
  • CPR-AED Instructor certification
  • Lifeguard or Lifeguard-IT certification
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) certification
  • Recreation Management Software "Fusion" and “Connect2”.
  • CA Driver License
  • Required CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Demonstrated experience developing/managing comprehensive risk management and emergency response action plans
  • At least 3 years experience working in a collegiate/community recreation environment (or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage day-to-day operations for assigned areas within the Health & Well-Being Recreation Center (HWRC), including building schedules, hours of operation, risk management protocols, emergency action plans, and facility standard operating procedures.
  • Work in collaboration with University Facilities to support ongoing maintenance, custodial services, and pool operations.
  • Oversee facility rentals, events, locker operations, and ensure adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • In collaboration with HWRC leadership, assist in preparing, forecasting, and monitoring annual operating budgets for assigned areas, and complete monthly/annual, inventory, and administrative reports.
  • Coordinate scheduling, risk management protocols, and program evaluation across Hospitality, Outdoor Adventures, Intramurals, Youth Camps, and Event Operations, ensuring registration systems function effectively and support positive participant experiences aligned with CSUDH strategic initiatives.
