About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) plays a crucial role in managing the nursing services department under the guidance of the Director of Nursing. This position involves assisting in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing services, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining a high standard of resident care. The ADON is responsible for coordinating nursing services with other departments, managing personnel, and ensuring that resident rights and needs are consistently met. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, as well as a commitment to providing compassionate and respectful care.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, directing, and managing the nursing services department.
  • Assist with developing and implementing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
  • Assist with implementing plans of action to correct deficiencies.
  • Assist with maintaining a Quality Assurance program.
  • Assist in planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining resident discharge procedures and plans.
  • Participate in surveys and inspections by government agencies.
  • Participate in the interviewing and screening of residents for admission to the facility.
  • Assist in assuring that each resident’s attending physician(s) and family or representative are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident’s health status.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating, and disciplining nursing services personnel.
  • Assist with developing work assignments for nursing services personnel.
  • Assure that nursing services personnel are not required to perform any duties outside of their scope of practice.
  • Assist with reviewing personnel complaints and grievances.
  • Participate in planning, implementing, conducting, and scheduling orientation, training, and in-service educational activities for nursing service personnel.
  • Maintain professional competence and current license(s).
  • Monitor nursing services to ensure that residents’ rights and needs are honored.
  • Assist in developing preliminary and comprehensive assessments and written care plans for each resident.
  • Assist with implementing procedures to ensure that trained and authorized personnel operate nursing services equipment safely.
  • Attend and participate in various committees and meetings.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety standards, aseptic and isolation techniques, and programs for monitoring communicable diseases.
  • Assist with coordinating nursing services with other services.
  • Monitor physician compliance with required visits.
  • Assist with ensuring that all nursing services personnel have valid and current licenses and are performing duties in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality and privacy.
  • Treat residents with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ensure compliance with Residents’ Rights.
  • Promptly report and maintain written records of all resident complaints and grievances.
  • Encourage residents and their families to participate in the development and review of care plans.
  • Ensure that all nursing services personnel are aware of the care plan and that care plans are used in providing daily nursing services.
  • Monitor nurses’ notes and residents to determine if care plans are being followed and needs are being met.
  • Participate in assessing, reviewing, and revising care plans.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with all services to achieve a team effort in developing comprehensive care plans.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director of Nursing.
  • Make periodic inspections of supplies and equipment.
  • Confirm that nursing services personnel follow established infection control procedures.
  • Confirm that nursing services personnel understand and follow departmental policies and procedures, Universal Precautions, safety rules, and fire and disaster procedures.
  • Ensure cleanliness of nursing services work areas.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director and attending physicians regarding resident care services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.
