About The Position

The Assistant Director, Engineering & Facilities (Approved Specialties) at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital assists in directing the planning, coordination, and evaluation of the Systems' capital programs which include General Construction, Telecommunications, Energy Conservation, and other Engineering Support Programs. Implements processes and procedures to aid in the direction of trade staff, the management of capital projects, and other programs within the designated areas of authority.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture from an accredited college or university; or in lieu of degree a New York State licensure as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect; or in lieu of degree of licensure, professional designation, or registration as listed, 5 years of experience in Construction, Design, Engineering or related fields in a health care environment, including two years in a supervisory capacity; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • License to manage a wastewater treatment plant, and/or must obtain the license within 6-12 months after start date.
  • Active NY State Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • 5-7 years of related experience and knowledge of power plants, boiler rooms, and other major utility systems.
  • Hospital or Healthcare facilities experience.
  • Ability to write reports, read blueprints, life safety drawings, and oversee the work of department employees, as well as outside contractors.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the direction of trade staff through the development processes and procedures for the implementation of maintenance operations, construction contracts, and capital projects.
  • Directs, coordinates, and maintains control over project assignments and related activities including construction, renovation, and other engineering activities.
  • Coordinates efforts and cooperates with Departmental Managers and Directors on matters of mutual concern and extends functional guidance and assistance.
  • Prepares reports, develops, and prepares engineering management audits, studies, surveys for the Director, and/or other Senior Management, detailing proposed new programs, statistical studies, leasing property, health care setting planning with recommendations and other data, as required.
  • Assists in the gathering of data and preparation of reports that outline the scope and estimated cost of projects proposed, implemented, and developed.
  • Helps the director develop and update cost estimates. Follows standard methods and procedures for the implementation of maintenance systems and operations, construction contracts, and/or capital projects development.
  • Administers surveys and attains data to support the development of reports, studies, and surveys for senior leadership to include new programs, statistical studies, leasing property, and health care setting planning. May assist in making other recommendations and provide other data in the absence of the Director, if required.
  • May consult on issues relating to engineering, construction, and/or design projects as required by senior leadership.
  • May also liaise with Federal, State, and City agencies. Supports the Directors' participation in the annual operating budget, assisting in the identification of staffing needs to support service delivery. May represent the Director in budget meetings.
  • Manages Facilities and Engineering Department, contracted services, and construction activities.
  • Supervises project activities through the assignment of qualified key personnel by establishing and maintaining project budget, equipment, material supplies, and necessary services and by obtaining and furnishing personnel with basic job information.
  • Organizes staff for regular periodic meetings. May review budget submissions and provide recommendations on proposed projects and programs.
  • Plans and implements programs to establish performance standards to attain increased productivity and accountability of trade staff.
  • Provides orientation, training, and guidance to staff. Conducts in-service training programs, continually assessing staff training needs and suggests changes to Director to provide more efficient operations. May, in the Director's absence, represent the System in certain legal matters dealing with State, City, and Federal agencies.
  • Participates in collecting and providing management information to record and report status of projects, assignment and cost by Capital Budget Control and other departments.
  • May act as a member of the Architect-Engineer Selection Board participating in the evaluation of prospective consultants for specific projects.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance and performance improvement (QA/Pl) activities and programs, training, and special studies, as required.
  • The Assistant Director at times may be asked to travel to and from any of the hospital associated buildings, ambulatory sites, and other facilities as part of the job function.
  • Maintains and repairs all non-medical equipment and physical assets. Oversees preventive maintenance programs, building infrastructure, and utility systems (steam, water, HVAC, power).
  • Ensures facility compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), State Health Department (DOH), ADA, and NFPA (Life Safety Code) standards.
  • Assists with hospital renovation projects, managing contractors, cost accountability, and coordinating construction activities.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates maintenance staff, technicians, and engineering personnel.
  • Manages operational budgets, prepares comprehensive reports, and handles energy savings programs.
