About The Position

The Assistant Director of Conservation Outdoor Recreation Environmental Education (CORE) performs advanced professional work within the administrative office and provides necessary oversight of the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Environmental Education (CORE) Division including administration, staffing, training, planning and programming and outreach. Responsible for coordinating and managing a variety of programs and partnerships while working closely with the Assistant Director of Natural Resource Management to ensure the parks are being interpreted to the public in their fullest capacity.

Requirements

  • Graduation form an accredited 4-year college or university.
  • Professional membership with NRPA.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide or Manager with NAI.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid LA Driver's License
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in environmental education and public programming with at least 3 years in supervisory capacity overseeing budget.
  • Advanced working knowledge of South Louisiana ecosystems as they relate to habitat health and species diversity.
  • Knowledge of common natural resource management practices in the areas of invasive species, visitor use impacts and aquatic system health.
  • Knowledge of Interpretive Program development as taught by the National Association of Interpretation.
  • Ability to develop interpretive materials both written and oral.
  • Ability to analyze and articulate BREC policies, operations and programs
  • Ability to supervise and direct employees, and develop a positive, production working relationship is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with departmental staff and to relate well to representatives of public and private interest groups, the public and officials of other agencies.
  • Ability to plan and organize people and programs effectively is required.
  • Ability to analyze financial reports and budget management.
  • Ability to assess performance problems and identify appropriate training and development programs.
  • Ability to quickly learn BREC policies and procedures and Programs
  • Ability to operate a BREC Vehicle to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to adjust to changing work demands, procedures, technology and or priorities
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with Department Heads, Management, coworkers, employees and general public.
  • Hire, fire, train, discipline and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
  • Must have a positive attitude with the willingness and desire to learn new skills

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all operation of the Conservation, Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Education Division including full time professional staff.
  • Oversees the operations of events, outreach and programming in the areas of outdoor recreation, nature centers and general conservation messaging.
  • Assists in the development of planning documents such as an agency-wide Interpretive Plan and should be familiar with the interpretive planning process.
  • Assists Assistant Superintendent in budget preparation, expense monitoring, long range planning and budgeting activities.
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent in establishing section priorities, long range strategic planning and exceed annual performance measures.
  • Communicates directly with Assistant Director of Natural Resource Management and develops a working relationship which strengthens education and programming possibilities in Natural Resources across the parish.
  • Serves as a liaison between BREC and clubs using CORE facilities by initiating and developing memorandums of agreement and partnerships with outside organizations and BREC
  • Performs field inspections and tours nature centers and education facilities to ensure proper operation of facilities.
  • Works directly with other BREC departments affecting CORE facilities and programs including but not limited to Community Events, Park Operations, Communications and Risk Management in assessing and addressing security issues.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates multiple staff.
  • Prepares annual budget; manages department revenues and expenditures and prepares financial reports; develops and monitors performance measures, statistics, program service evaluations, marketing efforts and other daily administrative functions
  • Attends meetings of the BREC Commission, Advisory Committees as well as Professional Conferences as representative of the department.
  • Recommends changes to procedures when necessary
