About The Position

The School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for an 11-month full-time, temporary (non-tenurable) faculty position (#131280) as the assistant director of bands at the rank of lecturer. This is a one-year temporary appointment. The contract may be renewed annually based on available funding, demonstrated need, and satisfactory performance as assessed by annual evaluations. The appointment start date is August 1, 2026. The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the athletic band leadership team, carrying out assigned responsibilities under the supervision of the Director of Bands and the Associate Director of Bands in support of the standards and mission of the MTSU band program. The MTSU School of Music serves approximately 250 undergraduate and graduate music majors pursuing Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Music degrees, as well as many students pursuing specialized minors.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in music is required by the appointment date.
  • Documented evidence of substantial instruction in marching and pep bands at the high school or collegiate level.
  • Documented evidence of technical and artistic competence as a conductor.
  • Documented evidence of administrative and organizational experience, including specific examples.
  • Provide a link(s) to MARCHING AND/OR PEP band rehearsal(s) and performance(s) (minimum 15 minutes) videos.
  • Provide a link(s) to concert band rehearsal(s) and performance(s) (minimum 15 minutes) videos.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligibility for U.S. employment is required before employment.
  • Must provide information about criminal history for a criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the assistant to the Director of the Band of Blue marching band.
  • Serve as director and conductor of the basketball and volleyball pep bands.
  • Serve as the conductor and artistic director of the MTSU Concert Band each spring.
  • Carry out assigned responsibilities under the supervision of the Director of Bands and the Associate Director of Bands.
  • Support the standards and mission of the MTSU band program.
  • Potentially be assigned additional responsibilities based on candidate's strengths.
