About The Position

The Center for Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute is seeking an accomplished scholar and leader to serve as Assistant Director for Community Outreach and Engagement. This role is crucial for bridging cancer center research with the communities it serves, ensuring community needs inform research, clinical trials, education, and cancer control efforts. The COE focuses on bi-directional engagement with diverse populations across Ohio, particularly rural, Appalachian, underserved, and historically marginalized communities, to advance equitable access to cancer prevention, screening, treatment, survivorship, and clinical trials. The Assistant Director will provide scientific and strategic leadership, facilitate the integration of community priorities into research programs, strengthen partnerships throughout Ohio, and develop innovative approaches to reducing cancer disparities. The successful candidate will maintain an active funded research portfolio while leading efforts to impact cancer outcomes within the catchment area.

Requirements

  • PhD, DrPH, MD, DO, DNP, PharmD, PsyD, or other terminal degree in public health, behavioral science, implementation science, epidemiology, health services research, social sciences, medicine, nursing, or a related field.
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Nationally recognized record of scholarship in community-engaged research, cancer prevention and control, health equity, implementation science, population health, or related disciplines.
  • Record of extramural funding as Principal Investigator or Multi-Principal Investigator.
  • Experience working with community organizations and diverse populations.
  • Experience leading multi-sector partnerships and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.

  • Experience serving within a Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) Community Outreach and Engagement program.
  • Experience contributing to NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center initiatives.
  • Expertise in community-based participatory research, dissemination and implementation science, cancer disparities research, rural health, population health, clinical trial accrual, health equity, community intervention research, and stakeholder-engaged research.
  • Experience conducting statewide or multi-state outreach initiatives.
  • Experience leading Community Advisory Boards and stakeholder engagement programs.

  • Experience mentoring faculty and trainees engaged in community-based research.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Founding Director to develop and execute the strategic vision for Community Outreach and Engagement.
  • Support implementation of COE goals aligned with Cancer Center Support Grant requirements.
  • Assist in developing infrastructure that supports meaningful bi-directional engagement between communities and researchers.
  • Promote integration of community priorities into cancer center planning and research activities.
  • Serve as a representative of the cancer center in statewide and national community engagement efforts when Founding Director is not available.
  • Build and maintain relationships with healthcare systems, advocacy groups, schools and universities, government agencies, employer organizations, and patient and survivor groups.
  • Support development and management of Community Advisory Boards and COE stakeholder councils.
  • Promote community trust and long-term partnership development.
  • Foster meaningful collaborations between researchers and community stakeholders.
  • Promote utilization of community-engaged and participatory research approaches.
  • Facilitate partnerships that address community-identified cancer priorities.
  • Support incorporation of community perspectives into research design, implementation, and dissemination.
  • Expand opportunities for community participation in cancer research and clinical trials.
  • Utilize community input, population data, and stakeholder feedback to develop strategies targeting areas with the greatest cancer burden.
  • Support translation of catchment area data into actionable research priorities and community interventions.
  • Support initiatives aimed at reducing disparities in cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, clinical trial participation, and survivorship.
  • Support strategies that improve outcomes among rural, Appalachian, minority, underserved, and medically vulnerable populations.
  • Promote culturally responsive and community-informed interventions.
  • Collaborate with healthcare systems and community partners to address social determinants of health impacting cancer outcomes.
  • Develop educational opportunities related to community-engaged research, health equity, cancer control, and dissemination and implementation science.
