About The Position

The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) at Carnegie Mellon University is a leading career services center dedicated to assisting undergraduate and graduate students with career exploration, professional development, experiential learning, and employment assistance. This role focuses on career development initiatives for students within the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, serving as the primary CPDC liaison for departments within the college. The Assistant Director/Career Consultant will coach and advise students using the CPDC’s Assess-Brand-Connect Career Learning Outcomes framework through individual sessions, group workshops, and online modules. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can evaluate student and corporate partner needs, develop creative strategies, and proactively implement them. Responsibilities include tracking internship and first-destination outcomes with high attention to detail. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate between academic and career realms in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, requiring strong relationship-building skills with students, faculty, department heads, and employers. Cultural sensitivity and advocacy for Humanities and Social Science students are essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • 1-3 years of experience in college student development, career development, and/or collegiate advising AND/OR in early career recruiting or human resources management required
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
  • Analytical, organizational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills – especially in communicating to audiences from different cultures
  • Strong technical skills and the ability and openness to learn and integrate into your advising activities: MS Office Suite, Google Suite, AI platforms (e.g., Gemini, Co-Pilot, ChatGPT), Canva, etc.
  • Ability to work independently on projects and function competently in a team environment required, time management and planning skills required

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree preferred
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • In depth understanding of/experience with recruitment practices preferred
  • Experience with Handshake CRM software, college-based career resources (e.g., PeopleGrove, CareerShift, VMock, etc.), and Canvas online content delivery programs preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assisting undergraduates and graduate students in assessing their career and professional development goals, building job search strategies, developing marketing materials, and practicing interviewing skills, etc. based on the CPDC Assess/Brand/Connect learning outcomes model
  • Creating, organizing and presenting career-related programs, workshops, career fairs and online learning content
  • Cultivating potential and developing existing relationships with employers to understand industry trends and recruiting needs
  • Building and growing positive relationships with department heads, academic advisors, and faculty.
  • Communicating openly and frequently with these partners
  • Tracking internship and first-destination outcomes with high attention to detail and accountability
  • Other duties as assigned
