The Department of Health Behavior is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Founded in 1943, the Department develops, and disseminates knowledge and interventions that promotes the health of individuals and communities. The Department’s 28 faculty members have backgrounds in behavioral science, health education, international health, social and cognitive psychology, medicine, medical sociology, and communications, and are united by their commitment to the disciplines of public health together with the social and behavioral sciences. The department also includes 10 permanent staff members and offers two degree programs (an MPH and PhD) that houses approximately 200 graduate students. In addition, the department houses a post-doctoral training grant funded through the National Institutes of Health. The total budget for the department is in excess of $10 million dollars. Over 47% of its annual revenue is from research, 25% state funding, 9.9% F&A funds, and the remaining 16.9% is a mix from restricted and unrestricted trusts, fees, and foundation funds. The Assistant Chair for Administration is responsible for managing the department’s overall budget, planning and reporting on financial issues. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant external and University policies related to business practices, research practices and human resources. The position is responsible for oversight of departmental administrative staff and services including IT and space management. The position reports to the department Chair, but serves the needs of department faculty in support of their research, academic and service missions.
