About The Position

Carthage College seeks an experienced and student-centered professional to serve as Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Involvement. This position provides leadership within the Office of Student Life and oversees the Student Involvement Office, with a focus on fostering student engagement, leadership development, and a vibrant campus community. The Assistant Dean/Director manages office operations and budgets, supervises professional and student staff, and leads key functional areas including student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and new student orientation. This role also contributes to student conduct processes and Title IX efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in higher education leadership, counseling, or related field required, Master's preferred.
  • Experience working with student conduct processes and student organizations.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and families.
  • Requires the ability to build rapport and utilize tact and proper judgment while providing academic, personal and social support to students, including an understanding of and ability to appropriately enforce the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and Title IX Amendment of 1972.
  • Requires the ability to use standard office equipment and technology, including a telephone, keyboard, and personal computer and tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and various Google applications.
  • Minimum of 5 years full time professional experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, planning, reasoning, organizational, and project management skills

  • Experience working with underrepresented/underserved populations is preferred.
  • Experience with Workday, ICS, Organization software, and Microsoft Excel are highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and collaborate the planning and execution of the new student orientation program, including scheduling, logistics, and large-scale and small-group experiences to welcome new students and their families to campus. Recruit, select, train, and supervise student orientation leaders. Coordinate with campus partners and third-party vendors to ensure content and services are executed during the orientation weekend.
  • Provide leadership to the Greek Life program including oversight of 6 sororities (2 national, 4 local) and 4 fraternities (2 national, 2 local) assisting students with recruitment, new member programs, anti-hazing initiatives, budgeting, organization development, risk management, leadership, service, and academic success.
  • Develop and support strategies to enhance co-curricular student involvement using data-informed decision-making to ensure offerings are maximized and meet current student interest and within the budget.
  • Co-advise Student Government. Meet regularly with the executive board and attend bi-weekly evening meetings.
  • Serve as a conduct officer, adjudicating student conduct cases.
  • Serve as an investigator for student Title IX formal complaints in collaboration with a co-investigator. Serve in a pool of advisors as needed.
  • Facilitate the campus Title IX committee and maintain all relevant print and digital resources and policies as the TIX Deputy for Resources. Provide coordination assistance and track programs related to Title IX and Sexual Assault Prevention.
  • Represent the Office of Student Life on campus committees and at institutional events. Collaborate with campus partners, including the Engagement and Inclusion Center and the Center for Faith and Spirituality.
  • Participate in a shared professional on-call rotation, providing crisis response, support, and referrals to the professional live in staff duty rotation.
  • Maintain an active presence and engagement with students, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Directly supervise one Assistant Director for Student Involvement and four student staff members. Carry out supervisory duties in accordance with college policies and applicable employment laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
