Assistant Controller

Lily and Fox•Arlington Heights, IL
•$100,000 - $130,000•Onsite

About The Position

Lily & Fox is hiring an Assistant Controller to build and operate the core accounting function for its direct-to-consumer nail wrap business. The company has 35 employees across the US, Australia, and Germany, and is bringing manufacturing in-house at its US facility. The finance function is lean, so this is a hands-on individual-contributor role reporting to the CEO, with no team initially. The role works closely with internal operational teams and external accounting and tax firms and offers the opportunity to build and improve accounting infrastructure. The Assistant Controller will own monthly close, reconciliations, and accurate financial reporting across a multi-entity, multi-currency business. As manufacturing ramps up, the role will develop inventory and cost accounting processes covering landed cost, work in process, standard costing, and variance analysis. The position is on-site at the facility and is not remote or hybrid.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of progressive accounting experience, including full ownership of a monthly close.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills.
  • Comfort with, or curiosity about, SQL; company data is in PostgreSQL.
  • Bias toward documentation and systems, with willingness to build the accounting function rather than merely maintain an established one.

Nice To Haves

  • Inventory or cost accounting experience; manufacturing, CPG, e-commerce, or distribution experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with e-commerce revenue recognition, including Shopify or similar platform settlements, refunds, chargebacks, and gift cards, is a significant plus.
  • Multi-entity or multi-currency exposure is a plus.
  • CPA or CPA-track is preferred but not required with strong experience.
  • SQL querying ability is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end monthly close, including journal entries, accruals, bank, merchant processor, and marketplace payout reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Reconcile Shopify, PayPal, and payment processor settlements against bank deposits and revenue records.
  • Manage bookkeeping across US, Australian, and German entities, including intercompany transactions and foreign exchange.
  • Build and maintain inventory accounting as manufacturing transitions in-house, including raw materials, work in process, finished goods, landed cost, and cost of goods sold.
  • Support US sales tax, Australian GST, and German/EU VAT compliance in coordination with external advisors.
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for external accountants at tax time and serve as the internal point of contact.
  • Identify and address process gaps, improving workflow automation and documentation.
  • Partner with operations on physical inventory counts, shrink analysis, and cycle counting as manufacturing scales.

Benefits

  • Attractive salary and equity.
  • Company-paid medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • Five weeks of PTO per year, including vacation, sick time, and holidays.
  • 401(k).
  • Coaching and training.
  • Opportunities to learn new skills and grow with the company.
