About The Position

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for the preparation of financial reports, including general ledger account reconciliations, month-end closing procedures, journal entries, and weekly cash flow reporting. This role involves maintaining accounting system documentation, preparing and handling sales tax returns and audits, and preparing work papers for federal and state tax returns. The Assistant Controller will also coordinate physical inventory counts, reconcile them with the general ledger, maintain property tax records and filings, manage the Fixed Asset Register, and handle intercompany activities and confirmations. Additionally, this position will assist with periodic forecasting and annual budgets, coordinate with independent auditors for reviews and audits, and ensure the accounting department is viewed as an integral component of the company. The role also includes cost accounting responsibilities such as cost analysis and reporting, variance analysis, inventory control, and monitoring absorption costing. Key performance indicators include timely closing of financial statements, data accuracy through weekly expense updates, and assisting departments with activity measurement. Proficiency in accounting software and ERP applications, particularly MS D365 Finance & Operations, is required. The Assistant Controller must complete all responsibilities professionally, maintain quality and confidentiality, participate in implementing strategic goals and quality programs, support lean enterprise techniques, and engage in professional development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Month-end closing procedures and journal entries.
  • Weekly cash flow reporting.
  • Preparation and maintenance of accounting system documentation.
  • Sales taxes return preparation and handling of any sales tax audits.
  • Federal and state return preparation of work papers for an outside accounting firm.
  • Preparation of audit schedules, audit interface, preparation of various tax analyses, and research to ensure compliance with state and federal registration and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with the materials group on physical inventory counts and reconciliation of physical counts to the general ledger.
  • Maintenance of property tax records and filings.
  • Maintain Fixed Asset Register.
  • Intercompany activity and confirmations.
  • Assist with periodic forecasting (short and long term) and annual budgets.
  • Coordinate semiannual reviews and annual audit with independent auditors, including audit support and documentation.
  • Cost Analysis & Reporting – analysis of fixed, variable, direct, and indirect costs associated with labor, raw materials, manufacturing, and shipping.
  • Variance Analysis – compare actual production and project costs against budgeted (or estimated) costs to identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement.
  • Inventory Control – reconcile inventory subledgers with the general ledger, perform regular cycle counts, and calculate obsolescence or slow-moving reserves.
  • Absorption Costing – monitor cost absorption rates and production hours, recommending improvements when over/under absorbed.
  • Ensure timely closing and compilation of the month/semi-annual/year-end financial statements.
  • Ensure data accuracy by supporting department managers with timely weekly updates of expense activity.
  • Assist departments with the correct identification and measurement of department activity relative to the company.
  • Complete all responsibilities in a timely and professional manner while maintaining quality and confidentiality.
  • Participate in implementing the Company's strategic plan goals and quality program initiatives.
  • Support lean enterprise techniques, good housekeeping practices, immediate corrective action, and other company-wide initiatives aimed at improving productivity and increasing profitability.
  • Participate in and support the Company’s professional development and training activities.
