About The Position

Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the Assistant Coach, Women’s Rugby position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 38 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-DI). The Assistant Coach is the assistant to the Head Coach, taking on significant responsibilities in practice planning, game strategy, and player mentorship. This role focuses on individual player development and serves as a direct line of communication between the head coach and athletes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2-4 years of coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Strong knowledge of the sport and player development.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of the sport’s rules, strategies, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA/league compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of athlete skill development and position-specific training.
  • Understanding of recruiting processes and athlete evaluation methods.
  • Awareness of injury prevention and safe training practices.
  • Strong instructional and coaching skills for both individual and team development.
  • Effective communication skills with athletes, colleagues, and recruits.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to utilize video analysis and performance review tools.
  • Basic data collection and performance tracking skills.
  • Must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting.
  • Must maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in practice planning, game strategy, and player mentorship.
  • Focus on individual player development.
  • Serve as a direct line of communication between the head coach and athletes.
  • Assist in designing and executing practice plans.
  • Evaluate athlete performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Support recruiting initiatives and relationship-building with prospective athletes.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and respond effectively under pressure.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to compliance standards.
  • Perform duties in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations.
  • Report any rules violations to the compliance office and appropriate parties.
