About The Position

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for protecting public health and the environment through various means, including supplying clean drinking water, treating wastewater, and reducing pollution. As the largest combined municipal and wastewater utility in the country, DEP employs nearly 6,000 individuals. The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) is specifically tasked with managing the City's drinking water and wastewater systems, safeguarding waterways, and overseeing the Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. In response to recent zoning reforms and Mayoral initiatives aimed at accelerating housing production, BWSO is experiencing a significant increase in applications related to Affordable Housing and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). This surge is expected to lead to a substantial rise in the volume of Water & Sewer Connection, Backflow Preventer Installation, Plan and Permit reviews, Inspections, and Approvals. To address these demands, BWSO is seeking two Assistant Civil Engineers for its Regulatory Review Unit within the Division of Engineering, Connections and Permitting. This unit is responsible for reviewing engineering plans and submissions from various entities, including private companies, City, State, and Federal agencies. The selected candidates will perform engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility under supervision.
