About The Position

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking two Assistant Civil Engineers for the Regulatory Review Unit within the Division of Engineering, Connections and Permitting. This role is crucial in addressing the increased volume of applications for Affordable Housing and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) driven by zoning reforms and Mayoral Executive Orders aimed at accelerating housing production. The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and protection of the City's drinking water and wastewater systems. The selected candidates will perform engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility, including reviewing engineering plans and submissions for compliance with NYCDEP standards and other relevant regulations.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews preliminary and final plans and documents of moderate complexity for the design and construction of projects that impact water mains and sewers to ensure compliance with NYCDEP standards and engineering practices and other relevant provisions of law, rules or regulation.
  • Assist supervisors in the research, planning, and development of design standard and documents, directives, and other engineering functions.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors and report on project status and tasks assigned, unanticipated conditions and possible problems and solutions.
  • Maintain detailed record of project progress including not limited to folder organization, and communication with other units and Bureaus (BWT, BPAC, BEPA, BEDC, Distribution, Field-ops, Budget, Construction, and Legal).
  • Prepares CPIs as needed should DEP be responsible for funding water or sewer betterment work.
  • Lead and organize meetings with other city agencies, contractors, consultants, utilities, and private entities in matters related to Plan Review submissions and prepares summary notes and minutes.
  • Engages in studies, investigations or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of the department.
  • Engages in other reviews and studies regulations associated with water and sewer connections.
