About The Position

The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) serves as a key member of the hospital executive leadership team and a strategic partner to the Chief Nursing Officer. The ACNO provides leadership and operational oversight for nursing practice, patient care services, quality outcomes, workforce engagement, and patient experience across the campus. The successful candidate will be an experienced nurse executive who champions clinical excellence, develops high-performing teams, fosters physician collaboration, and drives organizational performance through accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. The ACNO plays a critical role in achieving organizational goals related to quality, safety, workforce engagement, patient satisfaction, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and financial stewardship.

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive nursing leadership experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years in a Director-level nursing leadership role or above.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex patient care operations.
  • Experience improving quality, safety, workforce engagement, patient experience, and financial performance.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in Arizona or ability to obtain Arizona licensure upon hire

  • Previous experience as: Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, Associate Vice President of Nursing, Service Line Executive, or Comparable senior nursing leadership role
  • Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-BC)

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership for nursing operations and clinical practice.
  • Support and mentor Nursing Directors, Managers, Clinical Educators, and House Supervisors.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, professional development, and nursing excellence.
  • Promote shared governance and frontline caregiver involvement.
  • Lead organizational efforts to achieve excellence in Patient Safety, Regulatory Compliance, Accreditation Readiness, Clinical Quality Outcomes, Nursing-Sensitive Indicators, and Patient Experience.
  • Create an environment that attracts, retains, and develops top nursing talent.
  • Lead succession planning initiatives.
  • Develop future nursing leaders.
  • Improve employee engagement survey performance.
  • Support nurse residency and professional development programs.
  • Participate in operating and capital budget development.
  • Manage labor productivity and premium labor utilization.
  • Optimize resource utilization while maintaining quality outcomes.
  • Evaluate return on investment for nursing initiatives and capital investments.
  • Support achievement of organizational financial goals.
  • Develop strong partnerships with physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Partner with Medical Staff leadership to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary committees and operational councils.
  • Facilitate resolution of issues impacting patient, physician, and staff satisfaction.
  • Support patient throughput and capacity management initiatives.
  • Improve patient flow and discharge efficiency.
  • Lead nursing operations during periods of high census and operational demand.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and incident command activities.
