About The Position

The Assistant Chef supports daily kitchen operations at an Older Adult Center, ensuring compliance with NYC Aging meal service standards, food safety regulations, and program requirements. This role assists in the preparation, service, and documentation of meals while maintaining a safe and sanitary kitchen environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a commercial kitchen
  • Valid Food Handler’s Certificate required
  • Ability to comply with NYC Aging, DOHMH, and food safety regulations
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform physical kitchen duties
  • Strong organizational and teamwork skills
  • High School diploma or HS Equivalency, and 1-year cooking in commercial kitchen.
  • Must have a Food Handlers Certificate.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, lift 50 lbs., and move intermittently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in institutional or community-based food service preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook, and assist in serving meals in accordance with NYC Aging meal service guidelines, ensuring proper temperature control and portioning
  • Support completion of required documentation, including Daily Food Use Sheets and Monthly Inventory Reports
  • Implement and maintain food safety and sanitation standards to prevent health hazards
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is properly cleaned, maintained, and safely operated; report any issues to the Program Director
  • Maintain accurate food and supply inventory, and assist with ordering as needed
  • Ensure proper storage of dry, refrigerated, and frozen food, including daily temperature checks of refrigerators and freezers
  • Assist with kitchen setup and cleanup in collaboration with the Kitchen Technician and Custodian
  • Promote teamwork and maintain a respectful and professional work environment
