About The Position

The Office of the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel – Middle Region (“CCRC-M”) has an opening for a full-time capital post-conviction attorney position in Tampa Bay, Florida. CCRC-M advocates for indigent persons sentenced to death in the State of Florida in their state and federal post-conviction proceedings.

Requirements

  • Organize work and set priorities to meet critical state and federal court deadlines.
  • Commitment to the defense of death-sentenced individuals.
  • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically about capital litigation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop a rapport with people of different backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Capable of analyzing and communicating complex information.
  • Work well in teams.
  • Background investigation is required as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in criminal and/or capital post-conviction cases.

Responsibilities

  • Develop rapport with death-sentenced clients.
  • Investigate, draft, and present motions for post-conviction relief in state court.
  • Litigate access to public records.
  • Conduct evidentiary hearings in state circuit court.
  • File and argue appeals in the Florida Supreme Court.
  • File Petitions for Writs of Habeas Corpus in the federal district courts.
  • Handle appeals in the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
  • Work closely with investigators to clients’ friends and family members.
  • Identify documents to collect.
  • Review trial evidence.
  • Work with experts to develop mitigation themes and challenge forensic evidence.
