About The Position

The Department of Athletics is seeking an Athletic Trainer to join its comprehensive sports medicine program. This role is crucial for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of injuries sustained by student athletes. The athletic trainer will also be responsible for educating and supervising student athletes and staff on rehabilitation equipment and exercises, counseling athletes on their injuries, and monitoring their progress. Key duties include overseeing team practices and events, coordinating staff coverage, and ensuring effective communication among athletes, coaches, athletic training staff, and physicians. The position also involves maintaining medical records, completing injury reports, and assisting strength coaches with injury modifications and return-to-play protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and coordinate student athletes’ pre-participation physical examinations, including taking medical histories and assessing physical condition.
  • Perform special tests for joint stability, posture, and specific pathologies, and implement preventative measures such as bracing, padding, or taping.
  • Treat and evaluate injuries during practices and games, administer first aid, and collaborate with physicians and emergency personnel.
  • Educate, instruct, and supervise athletes in the use of rehabilitation equipment and exercises, providing daily counsel and treatment.
  • Evaluate athletes’ physical condition, response to treatment, and progress, discussing findings with physicians and the Assistant AD for sports medicine.
  • Inform coaches about the status of student athletes’ conditions, provide referrals to auxiliary medical personnel, and coordinate treatment plans.
  • Monitor team practices, athletic equipment, sporting grounds, and environmental conditions to ensure safe training and playing environments.
  • Coordinate and schedule medical coverage for all team practices and competitions, and liaise with visiting teams’ athletic trainers.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and forms for treatments, complete injury or accident reports, and assist with fitting athletic or rehabilitative equipment.
  • Assist coaches in designing specific conditioning, therapeutic, and rehabilitative programs for injured student athletes.
  • Coordinate and schedule pre-participation physical examinations and facilitate information exchange between athletes, trainers, coaches, physicians, and medical personnel.
  • Perform duties while traveling and working nights and weekends.
  • Report any misconduct or actions not in accordance with department guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee and train assistants in physical therapy modalities, evaluating their competency and supervising task performance.
  • Stay informed about developments in sports medicine and relevant NCAA legislation and policies.
  • Maintain certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) and National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
