About The Position

The Assistant Athletic Trainer for Club Sports plays an important role in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of San Diego State University student-athletes through the delivery of comprehensive athletic training services. Under the general supervision of the Sr. Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine, this position performs a full range of clinical athletic training responsibilities, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care. The incumbent works collaboratively with physicians, healthcare providers, coaches, and athletics staff to support student-athlete health and performance while contributing to a positive and professional athletic medicine environment. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with student-athletes and club sport participants while making a meaningful impact on their athletic and personal success.

Requirements

  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.
  • Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Experience as a certified Athletic Trainer at the collegiate, international, and/or professional level, with 2–5 years of experience beyond a bachelor's degree (graduate assistantship experience accepted).
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, physicians, parents, administrators, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Knowledge of athletic training and rehabilitation techniques, including experience with advanced treatment methods (e.g., functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesio Taping) and proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G equipment.
  • Experience with sports medicine operations, including medical supply purchasing, inventory management, budgeting, and insurance processes, with knowledge of medical supply vendors, quality, and cost management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and exercise sound professional judgment in a fast-paced athletic environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to away contests as required.
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct athletic training services to assigned club sport student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care.
  • Coordinate and provide medical coverage for practices, competitions, conditioning activities, and championship events as assigned.
  • Collaborate with physicians, healthcare providers, coaches, and athletics staff regarding injury status, treatment plans, referrals, and return-to-participation recommendations.
  • Maintain medical records, administrative documentation, clinic schedules, and other athletic training program requirements in accordance with university, healthcare, and NCAA guidelines.
  • Support athletic medicine operations through professional guidance of athletic training students, emergency preparedness efforts, and communication with student-athletes and campus partners.
