About The Position

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Science of Engineering and Technology at Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. The successful candidate will teach introductory and general chemistry, laboratory courses and special topics at the undergraduate level, and courses in our graduate program related to chemistry. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to direct undergraduate and graduate research projects. The department offers a diversity of options and tracks which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. We seek an accomplished teacher - scientist with a proven track record in teaching, grantsmanship and experience at an institution with a profile such as Norfolk State University. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing NSU’s research environment and contribute to the overall growth and success of the Department’s plan for new MS and PhD programs.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry or Materials Science Engineering (with an emphasis in Chemistry), from a nationally accredited institution of higher education.
• Demonstrated record of accomplishments in undergraduate teaching, laboratory courses and scholarly activities in Chemistry.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student-body audience, both verbally and in writing, with emphasis applied to a commitment to diversity.
• Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

• Background in polymer synthesis, polymer materials, including implementing research methodologies for extraction, characterization for application in metamaterials and photopolymerization and instrumentation.
• Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring and record of mentoring undergraduate students in research and in other discipline-relevant activities.
• Skilled in the use of evidence-based instructional approaches for effective learning, assessment, instructional, and online technology in support of students' learning.
• Research/Lab experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds and culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of background.

Responsibilities

• Teach junior and senior level undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate students.
• Contribute to grant-funded efforts.
• Participate in departmental activities related to current and planned initiatives in support of the Chemistry programs.
• Direct undergraduate and graduate research projects.
