About The Position

Boston College is seeking an Assistant/Associate Director (AD) to serve as a project manager and content expert to advance key philanthropic priorities across the University. This role aims to increase support and awareness for innovative programs, faculty and student achievements, research, and interdisciplinary initiatives. The AD will be a vital resource for colleagues across University Advancement (UA), including Development, Stewardship & Donor Engagement, Advancement Communications & Marketing, Alumni Relations, and the Business Intelligence and Reporting teams. The position reports to the Director of Development. Two separate roles are available, each dedicated to specific fundraising priorities and focus areas: Portfolio A (BC School of Law and the Lynch School of Education and Human Development) and Portfolio B (Connell School of Nursing, Messina College, Pine Manor Institute for Student Success, School of Social Work, and Clough School of Theology and Ministry). Candidates will be considered for either or both roles based on their interest and background. The salary range varies based on the title (Assistant Director, Associate Director level 1, Associate Director level 2) and relevant experience.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is required.
  • Professional experience requirements vary by role tier: 1–3 years for Assistant Director; 3–5 years for Associate Director (Level 1); and 5+ years for Associate Director (Level 2).
  • Success in this role requires intellectual rigor, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and the adaptability to manage shifting priorities across different departments.
  • Proven proficiency with CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Blackbaud, or similar advancement databases).
  • Analytical capability to translate data into strategic decisions and prospect opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate across university leadership and staff.
  • A track record of - or ability to articulate - meaningful engagement across varied student, alumni, and prospective donor groups.
  • Detail-oriented, highly adaptive, and thrives in high-volume, complex environments.
  • Exercise sound judgment and serve as a valued thought partner across teams, using a balanced consideration of facts, priorities, and alternatives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to examine challenges and opportunities in new, creative ways while prioritizing and organizing work effectively.
  • Make timely decisions within agreed-upon timeframes and take proactive initiative to identify and resolve complex problems; is a self-directed, forward thinker who can anticipate needs before they arise.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the University’s mission, culture, and constituencies.
  • Understand departmental priorities and collaborate seamlessly across leadership and peer teams to align work with broader university goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop compelling verbal and written content for advancement purposes, including proposals, donor acknowledgments, appeals, briefings, meetings, events, and leadership correspondence.
  • Supply content and help coordinate access to relevant university partners, ensuring consistency and accuracy of messaging across all advancement channels.
  • Create high-impact instructional resources and practical learning tools to educate internal advancement staff and strengthen fundraising opportunities.
  • Utilize data analytics and leverage internal partners to support Directors of Development in advancing targeted gift opportunities, streamlining internal workflows, and optimizing overall donor alignment.
  • Adapt and develop content expertise in new areas or take on special advancement projects as needed.
