Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Reliability, or related field) preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • 3+ years of experience in reliability, maintenance engineering, asset management, and/or utility operations preferred.
  • Experience in a water or wastewater utility, industrial plant, or similar environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience in reliability engineering and process improvement required; relevant certifications desired (e.g., CMRP, CMM, CRE, Lean Six Sigma).
  • Experience leading and implementing reliability and maintenance methodologies such as RCD, RCM, RCA, FMEA.
  • Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems used in water treatment and distribution (pumps, motors, valves, instrumentation, SCADA, etc.).
  • Proficiency with CMMS/EAM systems (e.g. HxGN EAM, Maximo, SAP, Cityworks) and data analysis tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI).
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to interpret large volumes of asset, work order, and maintenance data.
  • A process-oriented mindset with proven ability to develop, refine, and improve workflows.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, quality, and consistency.
  • Persistence, motivation, and adaptability, with the ability to manage competing and evolving priorities.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to unite cross-functional stakeholders across engineering, operations, maintenance, and other teams toward shared goals.
  • Strong facilitation skills to lead meetings and workshops related to reliability, PM optimization, and Defect Elimination.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the creation, updates, and retirement of asset records in HxGN EAM, including Bills of Materials, critical spare parts, and asset warranty information.
  • Oversee and analyze the completeness and quality of work order and asset data within HxGN EAM.
  • Develop, refine, and enforce cross‑departmental workflows for collecting, maintaining, and improving asset register data.
  • Monitor and analyze asset performance indicators and O&M data to identify reliability risks and opportunities.
  • Recommend improvements to preventive and corrective maintenance strategies, work execution, safety, inventory management, and equipment design.
  • Lead and manage SJW’s Reliability Centered Design (RCD) and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) programs for critical systems, including treatment plants, PFAS removal facilities, chloramination sites, and other chemical, electrical, or process‑intensive facilities.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), Preventive Maintenance Optimization, Defect Elimination, and other reliability initiatives.
  • Create process maps and implement process improvements.
  • Review in‑house maintenance tasks, inventory management, and contracted maintenance services for critical equipment to ensure alignment with RCM/RCD principles.
  • Define and enforce reliability requirements at key design and construction checkpoints for Engineering projects; lead the Facilities Design Standards Committee.
  • Utilize predictive tools such as vibration analysis, infrared thermography, ultrasound, oil analysis, and condition monitoring sensors where appropriate.
  • Interpret diagnostic results and coordinate with Engineering and maintenance teams to address emerging equipment issues.
  • Lead implementation and continuous improvement of digital condition monitoring programs.
  • Train and support Engineering, Operations, Distribution Systems, Treatment, Fleet, and Procurement teams on implementing reliability and maintenance best practices.
  • Ensure asset reliability activities promote a strong safety culture.
