About The Position

As an Asset Protection Detective at Macy’s, you help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. You use surveillance, investigative tools, reporting systems, and partnerships with store teams and law enforcement to identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect customers, colleagues, and the business. The role uses observation, investigation, training, and de-escalation to reduce loss while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment. You prepare documentation and evidence for investigations, audits, and legal proceedings, and may testify in criminal and civil cases. The position also involves responding to alarm calls, supporting special assignments, and facilitating first aid when needed. The role requires prolonged standing and walking around the store or department, and extended periods in enclosed surveillance areas. It may occasionally involve reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and frequently requires lifting or moving up to 30 pounds. All schedules include weekend shifts; hours depend on business needs and colleague availability. Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled for 30 or more hours per week.

Requirements

Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.
Ability to apprehend shoplifters.
Ability to sustain long periods of time enclosed in surveillance areas.
Ability to frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds.
Close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

Use surveillance techniques, investigative tools, and reporting systems to identify theft, dishonest activity, and shortage trends.
Partner with Asset Protection leaders, store teams, and law enforcement to support investigations and protect company assets.
Use de-escalation tools and sound judgment to help maintain a safe environment for customers and colleagues.
Prepare clear, timely, and accurate reports, statements, documentation, and evidence for incidents, investigations, audits, and legal proceedings.
Support team readiness by training colleagues on asset protection protocols.
Identify, investigate, and respond to theft and dishonest activity.
Use surveillance techniques to support the apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees while following company policies and legal requirements.
Recover stolen merchandise and provide statements, evidence, and documentation to support investigations.
Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.
Testify in court for criminal and civil cases as needed.
Respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.
Foster an environment of acceptance and respect in relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
