About The Position

As an Asset Protection Detective at Macy’s, you will help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. Using surveillance, investigative tools, and partnerships with store teams and law enforcement, you will identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect customers, colleagues, and the business.

The role focuses on reducing loss while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment through training, observation, investigation, and de-escalation. You will prepare documentation and evidence for investigations, audits, and legal proceedings, and may testify in criminal and civil cases as needed. You will also respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid when needed.

The position involves prolonged periods of standing and walking around the store or department, and may occasionally involve reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. It requires the ability to apprehend shoplifters, sustain long periods in enclosed surveillance areas, and frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds. Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled for 30 or more hours per week. Schedules include weekend shifts, and hours depend on business needs and colleague availability.

Requirements

• Ability to observe, identify, and respond to suspicious activity in a retail environment.
• Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively with customers, colleagues, leaders, and law enforcement.

• Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
• For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.
• Ability to apprehend shoplifters.
• Ability to sustain long periods of time in enclosed surveillance areas.
• Ability to frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to perform prolonged standing and walking; occasional reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
• Close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

• Use surveillance techniques, investigative tools, and reporting systems to identify theft, dishonest activity, and shortage trends.
• Partner with Asset Protection leaders, store teams, and law enforcement to support investigations and protect company assets.
• Use de-escalation tools and sound judgment to help maintain a safe environment for customers and colleagues.
• Prepare clear documentation, statements, evidence, and timely reports for investigations, audits, incidents, and legal proceedings.
• Support team readiness by training colleagues on asset protection protocols.
• Identify, investigate, and respond to theft and dishonest activity.
• Support the apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
• Recover stolen merchandise and provide statements, evidence, and documentation to support investigations.
• Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.
• Testify in court for criminal and civil cases as needed.
• Respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.
