Asset Protection Detective, Menlo Park - Full Time
About The Position
As an Asset Protection Detective at Macy’s, you will help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. Using surveillance, investigative tools, and strong partnerships with store teams and law enforcement, you will identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect customers, colleagues, and the business. The role contributes to reducing loss while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment. Through training, observation, investigation, and de-escalation, you will help protect assets, support colleagues, and give customers confidence while shopping. You will also prepare documentation and evidence for investigations, audits, and legal proceedings; support colleague readiness through training; respond to alarm calls and special assignments; and provide first aid when needed. Court testimony may be required for criminal and civil cases. The position involves prolonged standing and walking in the store, time in enclosed surveillance areas, and the ability to apprehend shoplifters. It may occasionally involve reaching above eye level, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and frequently lifting or moving up to 30 pounds. Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled for 30 or more hours per week. Schedules include weekend shifts, and hours depend on business needs and colleague availability.
Requirements
- Ability to observe, identify, and respond to suspicious activity in a retail environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively with customers, colleagues, leaders, and law enforcement.
- Ability to use sound judgment, de-escalation tools, and company procedures to support a safe environment.
- Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.
- Ability to apprehend shoplifters.
- Ability to sustain long periods of time enclosed in surveillance areas.
- Frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds.
- Close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

- Support the apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees while following company policies and legal requirements.
- Recover stolen merchandise and provide statements, evidence, and documentation to support investigations.
- Prepare timely and accurate reports related to theft incidents, investigations, audits, and assigned activities.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.
- Testify in court for criminal and civil cases as needed.
- Respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.
- Foster acceptance and respect in relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
