About The Position

Colonial Terminals, Inc. (CTI) is an industry leader in handling and storing liquid and dry bulk products. We own and operate the largest, independent, liquid and dry bulk storage facilities with breakbulk capability in the Southeastern United States. Colonial Terminals, Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Colonial Group, Inc. JOB SUMMARY Provides technical support by performing routine laboratory testing on new and existing asphalt products in support of Colonial asphalt terminals. Participates in the AASHTO proficiency sample program and assists with asphalt binder evaluations, product development, research activities, and laboratory operations.

Requirements

Associate degree from an accredited two-year college or a minimum of one year of experience working as a technician in an asphalt laboratory required.
Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to learn and properly operate laboratory testing equipment and instruments.
Ability to follow established testing methods, procedures, and safety requirements.
Ability to accurately document, organize, and maintain laboratory test results and records.
Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate and consistent testing results.
Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications with applicable agencies for asphalt testing proficiency.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory environment.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while performing laboratory testing and related duties.
Ability to sit for periods of time while completing documentation, data entry, and other administrative tasks.
Ability to frequently use hands and arms to handle samples, operate laboratory equipment, and perform testing procedures.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements as required.
Ability to regularly lift and carry laboratory samples, materials, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
Ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance when appropriate.
Ability to safely work around laboratory equipment, heated materials, chemicals, and asphalt products while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Must have sufficient visual ability to read instruments, observe test results, and accurately perform laboratory procedures.
Eligibility to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials science, civil engineering, or a related physical science field preferred.
Asphalt binder technician certification or related asphalt testing certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform complete assays of performance-graded asphalt products to generate monthly Certificates of Analysis.
Conduct physical testing on unmodified and modified asphalt binders to support product development efforts.
Assist with research studies and experiments, including sample preparation, testing, and data collection.
Participate in the AASHTO resource accreditation and proficiency sample program.
Perform basic maintenance and routine checks on laboratory testing equipment.
Assist with the production and testing of asphalt emulsions.
Test and evaluate the physical properties of industrial products as needed.
Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks and testing records.
Assist with project file data entry and documentation.
Maintain clean, safe, and organized laboratory work areas.
Follow established laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and quality standards.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
