About The Position

This is a part-time position supporting students with special needs in various locations within the Downey Unified School District. The role involves direct support, assisting with instructional activities, maintaining a positive learning environment, and reinforcing lessons. The aide will work under the supervision of after-school program staff and may assist with technology, adaptive devices, social skills, and personal care needs. The position also includes playground supervision and assisting with crisis intervention and discipline.

  • Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Knowledge of needs and concerns of children with a variety of special needs
  • Ability to perform general clerical duties at the request of supervisor
  • Ability to read and understand instructions, follow and give clear directions
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of established guidelines
  • Ability to adapt to individual needs of after-school program staff and students and work with interruptions
  • Ability to identify and respond quickly to emergency situations in a calm and resourceful manner
  • Ability to establish and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency; or proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units; or pass the Paraeducator Exam
  • Complete a mandatory Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) Training (Provided)
  • Complete mandatory training as designated by BEAM
  • Must Know ASL
  • Reliably commute or planning to relocate to Downey, CA before starting work (Required)
  • Willing to work from 1 pm to 6:30 pm Monday through Friday during an academic school year?
  • Behavioral Therapist/Interventionist: 1 year (Required)

Nice To Haves

  • Recent experience in working with groups such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds and/or experience requiring organizational skills is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Direct support to students with special needs
  • Participate in activities planned by the after-school program staff
  • Assist in the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials
  • Assist the after-school program staff with in-class activities based on specific instructions
  • Assist the after-school program staff in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment by keeping materials and equipment organized
  • Assist the after-school program staff in maintaining a good learning atmosphere by using effective teaching and behavior management techniques
  • Under direct supervision of the after-school program, assist with assessing student needs
  • Provide the after-school program staff with general impressions and observations of students
  • Work with students individually, in small groups, whole groups or learning centers planned by the after-school program staff and provide instruction to students
  • May assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment
  • Assist with social skills
  • Assist with toileting, diapering, dressing, and hygiene
  • Keep an organized and clutter-free restroom and/or changing area
  • Administer emergency treatment when necessary
  • May take children into the community
  • May assist children to feed themselves
  • May be assigned in more than one after-school program location
  • Assist with playground supervision
  • Work cooperatively with students, after-school program staff, district staff, and administration while performing assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Reinforce lessons/activities with small groups of learners
  • Assist after-school program staff in crisis intervention and discipline
  • Participate in program planning meetings at the request of the after-school program staff
  • Perform other job-related work as required
