About The Position
The ASL Behavioral Aide will provide direct support to students with special needs within various locations in the Downey Unified School District. This part-time role involves assisting after-school program staff with instructional activities, classroom management, and direct student interaction. The aide will work with students individually and in groups, reinforcing lessons and assisting with social skills, personal care, and potentially community outings. Collaboration with students, staff, and administration is key to maintaining a positive learning environment.
Requirements
- Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency; or proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units; or pass the Paraeducator Exam
- Recent experience in working with groups such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds and/or experience requiring organizational skills is desirable.
- Behavioral Therapist/Interventionist: 1 year (Required)
- Must Know ASL
- Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of children
- Ability to operate classroom technology equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children and adults
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
- Ability to show competence and assist with academic skills, e.g. reading and math
- Ability to communicate orally with correct language usage
- Knowledge of the general needs and behavior patterns of children
- Knowledge of safe work practices
- Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Knowledge of needs and concerns of children with a variety of special needs
- Ability to perform general clerical duties at the request of supervisor
- Ability to read and understand instructions, follow and give clear directions
- Ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of established guidelines
- Ability to adapt to individual needs of after-school program staff and students and work with interruptions
- Ability to identify and respond quickly to emergency situations in a calm and resourceful manner

- Complete a mandatory Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) Training (Provided)
- Complete mandatory training as designated by BEAM
- Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)

Responsibilities
- Direct support to students with special needs
- Participate in activities planned by the after-school program staff
- Assist in the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials
- Assist the after-school program staff with in-class activities based on specific instructions
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment by keeping materials and equipment organized
- Maintain a good learning atmosphere by using effective teaching and behavior management techniques
- Assist with assessing student needs under direct supervision
- Provide general impressions and observations of students to the after-school program staff
- Work with students individually, in small groups, whole groups or learning centers and provide instruction
- May assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment
- Assist with social skills
- Assist with toileting, diapering, dressing, and hygiene
- Keep an organized and clutter-free restroom and/or changing area
- Administer emergency treatment when necessary
- May take children into the community
- May assist children to feed themselves
- May be assigned in more than one after-school program location
- Assist with playground supervision
- Work cooperatively with students, after-school program staff, district staff, and administration
- Reinforce lessons/activities with small groups of learners
- Assist after-school program staff in crisis intervention and discipline
- Participate in program planning meetings at the request of the after-school program staff
- Perform other job-related work as required
