About The Position

This role involves identifying, removing, packing, transporting, or disposing of hazardous materials, including asbestos. Specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling or a confined entry permit are generally required. The position reports to the Foreman or General Foreman and is responsible for removing and/or replacing asbestos insulation on plant operating equipment, pipelines, storage vessels, and tanks in support of plant construction and maintenance activities. The role requires adherence to all hazardous waste handling guidelines, providing leadership and instruction to lower-level craftsmen, and completing records, maintaining tools and equipment, and performing clean-up activities. Safety is paramount, requiring observation and adherence to all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Other duties may be assigned as directed.

Requirements

  • Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.
  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
  • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
  • Plan work and select proper tools.
  • Compare and see differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
  • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
  • Work at heights without fear.
  • May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Works under immediate supervision.
  • Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment.
  • Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Responsibilities

  • Follow prescribed safety procedures, and comply with federal laws regulating waste disposal methods.
  • Record numbers of containers stored at disposal sites, and specify amounts and types of equipment and waste disposed.
  • Operate machines and equipment to remove, package, store, or transport loads of waste materials.
  • Load and unload materials into containers and onto trucks, using hoists or forklifts.
  • Clean contaminated equipment or areas for re-use, using detergents and solvents, sandblasters, filter pumps, and steam cleaners.
  • Construct scaffolding or build containment areas prior to beginning abatement or decontamination work.
  • Remove asbestos and/or lead from surfaces, using hand and power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, and high-pressure sprayers.
