About The Position

WUWM is hiring an Arts and Culture Multimedia Producer. This position has been grant-funded for two years, with a potential extension of a third year. The producer will develop stories for broadcast and digital platforms specifically about arts and culture news and community-related events and issues affecting Milwaukee and the surrounding region. The producer will develop special projects, including events and collaborations with other producers and reporters at WUWM and partners at Radio Milwaukee. In their second year, they may develop a special digital or broadcast series. The producer will research, prepare, and report stories from Milwaukee and the southeastern Wisconsin region that are balanced, issue-oriented, and analytical for use in news, public affairs programs and/or digital space. They will employ editorial judgement to select sources, conduct and record interviews, and write scripts. The producer will edit audio and video to create a broadcast spot or feature, talk show segment, a digital article and a social media post — including vertical video — for each story.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to discover and produce in-depth issue-oriented stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • A bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience, or 5 years of experience in broadcast journalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience working specifically with or covering diverse populations, related to the arts and culture community
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Southeastern Wisconsin issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WUWM and/or public radio
  • Audio editing experience
  • Vertical video production experience

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to content including interviewing sources, writing features/spots, and completing other necessary production tasks to create audio features, talk show segments, digital articles and social media content centered in arts and culture and occasional breaking news.
  • Applies editorial judgment and maintains industry standards of journalistic ethics and excellence.
  • Stays abreast of developments in arts, policy and culture in Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and maintains contacts on continued stories to ensure follow-up, and research topic areas to provide in-depth reports.
  • Collaborates with communications team and editors on both long-term and short-term multimedia projects.
  • Researches and develops production strategy for one or more programs across broadcast and digital platforms
  • Collaborates with other content creators in pre- to post-production processes, prepares materials, and handles logistics for broadcast and/or digital publications
  • Produces, develops, and edits content that may include identifying topics, themes, guests, conducting pre-interviews and/or interviews, writing, and/or integrating content for multimedia platforms
  • Maintains familiarity with studio equipment and/or applicable technology for production
  • Performs daily operational activities for live and pre-recorded content, and may direct the editorial and creative process of production activities
  • May schedule and direct operational activities for content production, including live/recorded studio or field productions
