About The Position

The Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University invites applications for the Doug and Ramona Lawrence Residency in Interdisciplinary Classics. This nine-month position is designed for an artist, scholar, or creative practitioner to advance student success and public engagement by bringing the ancient world to life through teaching, creative practice, research, and outreach connecting classical cultures with contemporary issues and communities. The Resident will develop and complete a large-scale experiential project that makes classical antiquity tangible and accessible to students across MSU, including those outside the humanities, and engages a wider public. Possible approaches include performance, digital reconstruction, public-facing media, game design, interactive storytelling, material culture, ancient technologies, or other forms of creative and immersive learning. The work should help students and the local community understand the continued importance of classical studies to fields such as the arts and sciences, engineering, medicine, policy, and public life. A central responsibility is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across the university. The Resident will work with faculty, students, and programs in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies and may build partnerships with colleges and residential programs across MSU. The residency is intended to bridge the humanities and other disciplines and demonstrate how classical studies can support broad, integrative, and socially meaningful education. The Resident will contribute to undergraduate education by teaching one course per semester and mentoring students in the Classical and Mediterranean Studies minor. The role also includes outreach to local secondary schools and efforts to broaden access to classical studies education. The successful candidate will have a record of creative, scholarly, pedagogical, and/or public-facing work connecting the ancient world with interdisciplinary practice, and should be able to design collaborative projects, engage diverse student audiences, communicate the value of classical studies beyond specialist settings, and help establish a visible and sustainable model for classics-centered learning at MSU. The position is funded at $90,000, covering an academic year’s salary and costs to undertake a major research and/or artistic or creative project. Benefits, including Health/Dental/RX, Social Security, and miscellaneous matches, are provided in addition to this amount. Residents are expected to work primarily on the MSU Main Campus in East Lansing, Michigan, during the residency, which runs from August 15 through May 15.
