The Jay I. Kislak Artist-in-Residence program at the University of Miami Libraries supports artists who use the Jay I. Kislak Collection to advance their artistic practice. The collection focuses on cultural encounters and their legacies across the Americas and includes rare books, manuscripts, contemporary artists’ books and zines, graphic art, maps, photographs, and broadsides. The program is funded by an endowment from the Kislak Foundation to promote scholarly use of the collection. Residencies of up to two months are open to artists at any career stage and in any discipline, including literary, visual, and performing arts. The artist will collaborate with the Kislak Collection and Special Collections to create works inspired by collection materials. Artists are asked to consider submitting drafts, edited iterations, sketches, or similar materials to the Libraries’ collection, while retaining full intellectual control over their final work or works. The artist-in-residence receives a stipend of $4,500 per month. Residencies take place between June 1 of the award year and April 30 of the following calendar year. Fellowship and residency dates must be consecutive. A month is defined as 30 days and does not need to correspond to a calendar month.
