About The Position

The City of Mississauga’s Legal Services Division is seeking two Articling Students for the 2027-2028 articling term, which will last for 10 months. This role is part of a hybrid work model, allowing for two remote work days per week, with exceptions for court attendance and in-office meetings. The program includes an Articling Student Exchange Program with Pallett Valo LLP, a Mississauga law firm, for a 4-to-6-week period to provide experience in private practice.

Requirements

  • Qualified to commence articling on August 16, 2027, in accordance with the requirements of the Law Society of Ontario, for a period of ten (10) months.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Strong legal research skills and facility using digital and online reference materials and tools.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to draft clear, concise and persuasive memoranda, pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Strong oral communication skills, with a willingness to appear in court.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills and the proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work.
  • Ability to attend, arrive on time, and travel between various City of Mississauga sites and courthouses.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous court, mock trial, mooting and/or legal clinic experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research.
  • Draft memoranda and other legal opinions.
  • Draft legal documents, such as by-laws, resolutions, contracts, agreements, and court pleadings or submissions.
  • Prosecute municipal by-law charges, Highway Traffic Act charges, and other Provincial Offences Act matters on a weekly basis.
  • Be responsible for the carriage of simple files appropriate for their level of knowledge and experience.
  • Provide support to lawyers on different matters relating to the operations of the City of Mississauga.
  • Accompany lawyers and prosecutors to client meetings, examinations for discovery, mediations, hearings and similar events to gain hands-on experience in the practice of law.
  • Participate in the Articling Student Exchange Program with Pallett Valo LLP.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Hourly Rate/Salary: $44.27- $59.03 (based on Salary Grade E $80,567- $107,426)
