About The Position

FSRI is seeking an Art Teacher for South County Academy, a non-public, special education certified school serving girls ages 13–18 with complex educational, behavioral, and therapeutic needs. Our students often come to us following previous placements through DCYF and benefit from a highly structured, trauma-informed environment focused on healing, growth, and individualized support. The Art Teacher is responsible for developing and delivering engaging art lessons that foster creativity, self-expression, and an appreciation for visual arts. This role involves guiding students in exploring various artistic techniques, mediums, and art history while supporting individual artistic growth. The position requires teaching students with significant emotional/behavioral needs in a clinical residential school setting and developing and monitoring student Individual Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with Department of Education regulations and standards. The Art Teacher will work collaboratively with the management team to ensure the safety, stability, and well-being of students placed through the Department of Children, Youth and Families. This is a part-time (30 hours a week), 185-day position.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Teaching or Education
  • RI certification as Teacher of regular or special education
  • Current driver’s license, reliable transportation, registration and auto insurance
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Travel to and from community locations and office site, which could include using walkways, stairs and/or elevators
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs
  • Excellent multitasking and communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with children with behavioral/psychiatric challenges
  • Skilled in operating various medical record software and hardware, word-processing, and database software programs
  • Spanish Speaking preferred and is compensated
  • Bilingual/ASL skills are compensated by an additional 6%, above base pay.
  • Multilingual skills are compensated by an additional 8%, above base pay.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and delivering engaging art lessons that foster creativity, self-expression, and an appreciation for visual arts.
  • Guiding students in exploring various artistic techniques, mediums, and art history while supporting individual artistic growth.
  • Teaching students with significant emotional/behavioral needs in a clinical residential school setting.
  • Developing and monitoring student Individual Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with Department of Education regulations and standards.
  • Working collaboratively with the management team to ensure the safety, stability, and well-being of students in our care that have been placed through the Department of Children, Youth and Families.
  • Providing emergency coverage; ratio to the programs as needed.
  • Ability to be trained in and implement de-escalation techniques utilizing Handle with Care when necessary.
