About The Position

FSRI is seeking a Social Studies Teacher for South County Academy, a non-public, special education certified school serving girls ages 13–18 with complex educational, behavioral, and therapeutic needs. Our students often come to us following previous placements through DCYF and benefit from a highly structured, trauma-informed environment focused on healing, growth, and individualized support. The position is responsible for delivering engaging social studies curriculum including American History, World History, literature etc. to high school students with significant emotional/behavioral needs in a clinical residential school setting. The teacher will develop and monitor student Individual Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with Department of Education regulations and standards and work collaboratively with the management team to ensure safety, stability and wellbeing of students in our care that have been placed through the Department of Children, Youth and Families. This is a full-time (32 hours a week), 185-day position with hours from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Teaching or Education
  • RI certification as Teacher of regular or special education
  • Skilled in operating various medical record software and hardware, word-processing, and database software programs
  • Excellent multitasking and communication skills a must
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team
  • Current driver’s license, reliable transportation, registration and auto insurance
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Travel to and from community locations and office site, which could include using walkways, stairs and/or elevators
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with children with behavioral/psychiatric challenges
  • Spanish Speaking preferred and is compensated
  • Bilingual/ASL skills are compensated by an additional 6%, above base pay.
  • Multilingual skills are compensated by an additional 8%, above base pay.
  • Candidates with a master’s degree will receive an additional $3,000.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency coverage; ratio to the programs as needed.
  • Ability to be trained in and implement de-escalation techniques utilizing Handle with Care when necessary.
