About The Position

The Great Basin Institute (GBI), in partnership with the Southeast Regional Office (SERO), is seeking to hire one Archives Technician to support the region’s museum program. The Archives Technician will assist the NPS Archivist in processing records from the Blue Ridge Parkway collective backlog, which totals an estimated 575 linear feet (LF) of archives, and creating new finding aids or updating existing ones. The role ensures that records documenting the parks’ management of cultural resources, natural resources, and land acquisition and use are archivally processed and accessible to park staff and the general public. This is a seasonal, full-time position for a 54-week appointment.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that includes major study in a field directly related to Archives and/or Records Management.
  • Experience including activities such as entering archive collection documentation into automated databases.
  • Experience cataloging archival and museum collections and generating findings aids.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from a library, information science or public history program with an emphasis in archival management.
  • Demonstrable experience appraising government records using a records schedule to determine retention.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the NPS Archivist in processing records from the Blue Ridge Parkway collective backlog and creating new finding aids or updating existing ones.
  • Ensuring that records documenting the parks’ management of cultural resources, natural resources, and land acquisition and use are archivally processed and accessible to park staff and the general public.
  • Appraising agency-produced records against the disposition schedule to determine their suitability for inclusion in the park’s resource management records collection.
  • Performing archival conservation of various records formats, including paper, photographs, negatives, slides, videocassettes, compact discs, cyanotypes, and electronic files.
  • Writing detailed, accurate archival descriptions of collections materials, encompassing the functions and processes documented within the collection’s series.
  • Developing and implementing an organizational hierarchy for each collection that reflects the provenance of the collection’s records.
  • Separating, flattening, rolling, and processing of oversized documents including maps, project schematics, and architectural drawings.
  • Cataloging park archival collections at project closeout in the agency’s cataloging database, MCMS.
  • Appropriate documentation and destruction of temporary records beyond the retention date encountered during the processing project.
