About The Position

Archives & Research Library Project Coordinators at the Center of Southwest Studies support the stewardship, organization, and accessibility of archival and research library collections for Fort Lewis College and the broader public. This temporary position will focus on processing the Center’s map collections through arrangement and description, rehousing, inventorying, digitization support, and related collections management activities.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree
• An interest in history, anthropology, Indigenous art and culture, archaeology, or related field.
• Responsible and reliable, with a desire to learn.
• Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong community engagement skills and a desire to authentically collaborate with diverse groups.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

• Prior work or volunteer experience in a library, museum, gallery, or archives
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud
• Knowledge of photography and digitization workflows
• Familiarity with archival processing standards and practices
• Experience with collections databases or data entry systems

Responsibilities

• Perform archival processing duties, including: Process existing map collections, which includes arranging and describing collection items, Catalog maps in the ArchivesSpace collections management database, Create metadata for each map, Assign accession numbers to maps that do not have one, Rehouse and label archival items according to best practices, Create template for finding aids, Digitize items as necessary
• Perform preventative conservation duties, including: Assess the condition of rolled maps, Surface clean maps prior to humidification, Prepare a humidification chamber, Flatten and dry maps under weight, Store flattened maps properly
• Perform other duties as assigned
