About The Position

ASC Group, Inc. is seeking a full-time Architectural Historian - Principal Investigator to join our team in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role involves evaluating the eligibility of historic buildings for the National Register of Historic Places and conducting documentation for Section 106 compliance and Section 4(f) for coordination with various state departments of transportation and historic preservation offices. The position requires working collaboratively with archaeologists and environmental scientists, managing investigations largely independently, and developing new projects. The candidate will also be responsible for performing literature reviews, conducting field investigations, completing survey forms and evaluations, coordinating with consulting parties and clients, and preparing proposals. In-office attendance is required, with remote work an option after 90 days based on performance and job requirements. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History.

Requirements

A Master's (preferred) or Bachelor's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Art History, or a closely related field.
A minimum of 5 years' experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in cultural resource management.
Experience with Section 106 regulations and compliance.
Experience with determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Attention to detail.
Ability to work as a team member in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Ability to effectively navigate clients through the Section 106 process.
Must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards (36 CFR 61) for Architectural History.
Must have or obtain a valid driver's license.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Must successfully complete a background check, motor vehicle check, and E-verify check.
Must provide proof of automotive insurance coverage.

Nice To Haves

Prior experience working with the Indiana DHPA and Indiana DOT Cultural Resources Office is preferred.

Responsibilities

Evaluating the eligibility of historic buildings for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Conducting Section 106 compliance and Section 4(f) documentation.
Coordinating with Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT), Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), Michigan DOT, and Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Working with a team including archaeologists and environmental scientists.
Managing or conducting investigations largely independently, in coordination with the Regional Manager and Architectural History Project Manager.
Developing new projects.
Performing literature reviews and records checks.
Conducting research at archives/historical organizations.
Conducting field investigations.
Completing Historic Resource Survey Forms.
Completing Determination of Effect Evaluations.
Coordinating and completing resolution of adverse effects.
Completing Section 4(f) Evaluations.
Coordinating and communicating with consulting parties and clients.
Coordinating with state agencies (primarily State DOT and State SHPO).
Conducting light marketing.
Preparing proposals and cost estimates.
Attending client/agency, consulting party, and public meetings.
