About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring an Architect in its Project Management Office (PMO). The role combines hands-on architectural design and construction-document production with multidisciplinary coordination and technical oversight of work prepared by subcontracted architectural and engineering firms. The Architect personally develops complete design packages for smaller in-house projects, including tenant improvements, laboratory remodels, facility modifications, renovations, repairs, and additions. The position is intended for an experienced architect who wants to remain actively involved in design, field investigation, code analysis, technical detailing, construction-document production, and construction support while coordinating engineering disciplines and reviewing consultant work. The position may be filled at the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level, based on the hiring team's assessment of the candidate's knowledge and experience. At TSS.4, the Architect also serves as an architectural subject matter expert on complex laboratory and high-hazard facility projects, leads technical and peer reviews, advises project teams and management, develops architectural criteria and practices, represents PMO Design and Engineering on specialized work, and mentors colleagues. A hybrid schedule may be available after a probationary period, with the schedule and required in-office days determined by team and organizational needs. This is a career-indefinite position open to Laboratory employees and external candidates. The role requires eligibility for and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Selected external candidates must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Work in certain Limited Areas may restrict possession of personal or laboratory mobile and wireless devices.

  • California architect license, or licensure in another U.S. jurisdiction with the ability to obtain California licensure through reciprocity within 12 months of employment.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing complete architectural construction-document packages for renovations, remodels, tenant improvements, repairs, or similar existing-facility projects, including field investigation and existing-condition verification.
  • Broad technical knowledge of architectural design, construction, building systems, assemblies, materials, detailing, and existing-condition challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience performing building-code, life-safety, egress, and accessibility analyses, with advanced knowledge of the California Building Code, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and federal accessibility requirements.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary designs, supporting construction, developing A/E scopes and criteria, and reviewing consultant-prepared construction documents.
  • Ability to resolve complex architectural problems using technical judgment, research, applicable codes and standards, and consultation with subject matter experts; manage multiple priorities; and communicate technical information effectively to project teams, management, stakeholders, consultants, and drafting support.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam or comparable PDF-editing software, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • At the TSS.4 level, subject matter expert knowledge of architectural design and construction for complex laboratory, research, high-hazard, continuously operating, clean room, data center, industrial, or similar technically complex facilities.
  • At the TSS.4 level, significant experience personally producing construction documents for highly complex projects and resolving unusual, ambiguous, or high-consequence design issues.
  • At the TSS.4 level, significant experience providing technical leadership, peer review, and mentoring while remaining actively engaged in design and construction-document production.
  • At the TSS.4 level, significant experience planning highly complex projects, including design estimates, developing and managing budgets and schedules, and stakeholder coordination.
  • At the TSS.4 level, demonstrated ability to establish architectural approaches when requirements, existing conditions, codes, standards, or technical criteria are incomplete, conflicting, or uncertain.
  • At the TSS.4 level, experience developing, interpreting, or influencing architectural standards, design criteria, technical practices, or project-delivery decisions beyond individual assigned projects; expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to advise senior management on complex architectural and project issues.

Responsibilities

  • Translate stakeholder requirements into technical criteria and coordinated architectural solutions for projects with operational, security, existing-condition, schedule, and construction constraints.
  • Plan and prepare complete architectural construction-document packages for small and medium-sized in-house projects, from conceptual design and existing-condition verification through final drawings and specifications.
  • Develop coordinated architectural designs covering programming, space planning, building codes, life safety, egress, accessibility, building assemblies, interiors, exterior envelope, materials, details, schedules, and specifications.
  • Perform building-code, life-safety, egress, and accessibility analyses and incorporate findings into designs and construction documents in accordance with applicable codes, standards, laws, regulations, and LLNL requirements.
