About The Position

The Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, Bureau of Archaeological Research is seeking an Archaeology Supervisor. This position serves as the supervisor of the Underwater Archaeology section. The role involves managing a team, overseeing underwater field projects, administering the Exploration and Recovery permit program, representing the Department at public forums, conducting research on submerged cultural resources, and managing the section's vessels and equipment.

Requirements

  • A minimum of six (6) years of professional underwater archaeology field experience. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Anthropology, Archaeology, Maritime Studies, or a closely related field may substitute for the required years of experience.
  • Successfully completed a scientific diving program (AAUS or equivalent).
  • Boating Safety Education Identification Card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience conducting submerged cultural resource surveys including remote sensing, underwater site recording, and assessment.
  • Knowledge of pertinent state and federal submerged cultural resource policy and legislation.
  • Technical archaeological experience that includes report writing, data management, laboratory management, cataloging, artifact documentation.
  • Boating experience that includes launching, trailering, and operating vessels.
  • Advanced knowledge of underwater archaeological field procedures
  • Knowledge state & federal submerged cultural resource law
  • Experience w/ remote sensing software/hardware (SonarWiz5, Marine Sonic Sea Scan, G882 & ESRI's GIS software suite
  • Ability to communicate clearly (verbal & written)

Nice To Haves

  • Possesses the qualifications, trainings, certifications, and experience necessary to serve as the program's Dive Safety Officer (DSO)
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience in the field of archaeology, anthropology; or maritime related programs and/or projects
  • Three years of experience in the administration of archaeological or maritime related programs and/or projects.
  • Knowledge of the types and distribution of Florida’s submerged pre-contact and historic archaeological sites.
  • Extensive GIS experience
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Vessel/equipment maintenance and repair (including outboard motors, trailers, 12-volt wiring, fiberglass repair, airlift, dredge, remote sensing equipment).

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the supervisor of the Underwater Archaeology section of the Bureau of Archaeological Research, Division of Historical Resources.
  • Manages a team of up to five (5) professional Career Service and OPS employees.
  • Performs general administration activities for the Underwater Archaeology Section, such as timesheets, leave requests, hiring, disciplinary actions, and work plans.
  • Plans and organizes workload and workflow of the Underwater Archaeology Section, including an annual plan for increased efficiency, staff changes, and/or budget requests.
  • Plans, assigns, and coordinates with staff on a regular basis.
  • Reviews section correspondence as needed.
  • Manages and oversees BAR’s underwater field projects and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local statutes, rules, regulations and ordinances.
  • Supervises the administration of the Exploration and Recovery permit program (1A-31, F.A.C.).
  • Represents the Department at public meetings, workshops and forums, on webinars and conference calls and frequently serves as the primary contact for federal, state, or local agencies, community groups, private consultants and the public for inquiries and requests about underwater archaeological resources.
  • Conducts and coordinates research on state owned lands and collections with a focus on locating, protecting, preserving, and interpreting submerged cultural resources on sovereignty submerged lands.
  • Manages service and upkeep of the Underwater Archaeology Section’s vessels and equipment.
