Archaeological Specialist (On-Call)
About The Position
Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is seeking On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians in the Northwest Region, including Seattle, WA, Portland, and Bend, OR. This role involves participating in compliance monitoring and reporting activities for on-going construction projects, working near heavy equipment, and identifying archaeological resources. The technicians will coordinate with construction personnel, interact with Native American monitors, and utilize electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications. The Cultural Resources Team at ESA provides expertise for various agencies, focusing on protecting and respecting the nation's history and tribal communities.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in relevant academic and/or professional scientific or environmental consulting environment focused on archaeological contexts
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant, college-level coursework in archaeology, anthropology, history or related field, and applied experience
- Able to work with all staff levels and to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Able to pass a federal and state background check for project-based assignments
- Must possess necessary skills to safely operate field equipment, including sampling equipment, GPS units, tablets/smart phones, and job-specific equipment
- Familiar with working on active construction sites
- Knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region
- Minimum of six months of field experience or relative academic field experience in the Northwest Region
- Able to walk long distances carrying a backpack
- Able to lift at least 40 pounds
- Confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments
- Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas

- Demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring
- Familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, and interacting with Native American monitors
Responsibilities
- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel
- Write and maintain written daily surveys, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs
- Utilize electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications
- May be asked to direct small crews of archaeological technicians
