Archaeological Field Technician (On-Call)
About The Position
Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is seeking On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians for their Northwest Region, specifically in Central Washington (Ellensburg, Mattawa, Quincy, etc.). The role involves supporting local work and requires experience in archaeological surveys and documentation according to local, state, and federal guidelines. Candidates should be comfortable with fieldwork in various environments, including remote and urban settings, and be able to perform physically demanding tasks. Some night and/or weekend work may be required, and there will be opportunities to participate in compliance monitoring for construction projects, working near heavy equipment.
Requirements
- Experience in archaeological surveys and documentation following applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements.
- Reside in the Central Washington area.
- Experience conducting cultural resources survey work in Central Washington, specifically in close proximity to the Columbia River and associated reservoirs.
- Knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region.
- Minimum of six months of field experience or relative academic field experience in the Northwest Region.
- Ability to walk long distances carrying a backpack.
- Ability to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments.
- Ability to work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas.
- Experience working near heavy equipment.

Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological survey and site testing activities (shovel probe excavation, test unit excavation, surface survey, site recording, etc.).
- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources.
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel.
- Write and maintain written daily surveys, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
