About The Position

The Recreation Division, part of the Community Services Department, is seeking a part-time Aquatics Coordinator. This role involves planning, organizing, and coordinating aquatics and recreation programs and activities, as well as overseeing the daily operations of aquatics programs. The position works under the direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor and may serve in a lead capacity for aquatics staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of responsible experience teaching, planning, or managing recreational activities is desired.
  • Certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Management and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor are desired.
  • Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of organizing and implementing a variety of aquatics programs and activities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of employee leadership, including work planning, assignment, and feedback.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures as required for aquatics programs.
  • Knowledge of techniques for effective communication, providing a high level of customer service, and effectively representing the City.
  • Knowledge of basic budget tracking, such as monitoring program revenue and expenditures.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate aquatic program development.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
  • Ability to properly schedule and promote programs, activities, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare related reports.
  • Ability to coordinate and monitor the work of others.
  • Ability to provide detailed and timely feedback to staff.
  • Ability to effectively and tactfully communicate in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to deliver effective presentations to groups.
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures related to the department, organizational unit, or program to which assigned.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record upon hire.
  • Possession and maintenance of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
  • Possession and maintenance of American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22).
  • Possession and maintenance of American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates the operations of the aquatics and recreation programs.
  • Ensures aquatics programs are in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and requirements; monitors changes in law, regulations, or technology that may affect programs.
  • Maintains accurate and current certification records for all lifeguard staff.
  • Monitors and inspects recreation facilities for safety and security.
  • Provides staff with all necessary safety equipment and training with a focus on risk management.
  • Provides exemplary customer service to all individuals, maintaining a positive customer service environment.
  • Coordinates the recruitment, training, and work of supplemental staff and volunteers; responsible for staffing schedules; may provide lead direction to regular employees.
  • Coordinates applicable staff training programs to ensure staff are sufficiently trained and program goals are met.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of program goals and objectives.
  • Actively participates and engages in local, state, and national initiatives and trends affecting aquatic recreation programs.
  • Coordinates and reviews all program paperwork, including injury report forms, week in review forms, timecards, and supply requests; maintains accurate records and files.
  • Oversees program events and activities, including swim lessons; ensures staff ratios and plans on-site events.
  • Prepares, updates, and maintains reports, correspondence, and staff manuals.
  • Serves as emergency substitute of program(s).
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for information.
  • Assesses equipment and supply needs and approves purchases.
  • Coordinates preparation and use of facilities for programs.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with user groups, staff, and administration.
  • Assists with budget preparation, tracking, and implementation.
  • Coordinates marketing and publicity of programs.
  • Instructs Red Cross courses, including Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Instructor Training, CPR, and Emergency Response.
  • Serves in the capacity of a lifeguard as needed.
  • Interprets and implements policies and procedures related to the department, or organizational unit, or program to which assigned.
  • Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
