About The Position

The Aquatics Coordinator provides leadership and supervision for aquatic programs and recreation facilities, primarily during evenings and weekends. This regular, full-time, year-round position works 40 hours per week on a current Sunday–Thursday schedule, with weekend hours required. The coordinator oversees aquatic programs and facilities to maintain quality, customer service, and safety standards; leads and supports front-line aquatic staff; and communicates with staff, volunteers, coaches, and patrons. The role assists supervisors with planning, developing, marketing, implementing, and evaluating aquatic programs and services, as well as schedules, rules, and staff and volunteer training. The coordinator may also serve as a lifeguard or swim instructor, work as an FSL at recreation facilities, purchase supplies, and perform Recreation 1, 2, and 3 duties. The position works under the general supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor and works closely with the Facility Shift Lead to coordinate daily operations such as breaks, pool transitions, and lifeguard rotations. In assisting the supervisor, the coordinator may direct and assign work, adjust schedules, approve timesheets, train and coach staff, set goals, evaluate staff, and assist with recruiting. Work may take place indoors or outdoors, depending on the facility, and may involve extreme weather, varied hours, and contact with staff and the public. Physical duties include frequent walking, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling. The position requires regular computer and office-equipment use, sustained concentration, and the ability to work amid moderate noise and frequent interruptions. Applicants are screened for relevant qualifications; employment offers are contingent on credential and other required verification, including a background check and driving-history review when driving is required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of closely related work experience, including at least one year of team lead experience, or a satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Strong knowledge of aquatic recreation programming, including its development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of effective lifeguard and customer service practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures for the assignment.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and significant decision-making.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of tasks, organize and prioritize personal work and the work of others, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and build positive, constructive, respectful relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to use computer programs and common office equipment and stay current with new programs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Knowledge and ability to teach the full lesson spectrum from infants through adults, swim, and demonstrate all swim skills to Bend Park and Recreation District standards.
  • If choosing a personal vehicle for travel to additional work sites, possess or obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days and have an acceptable driving history under district policy. Lack of a license or an unacceptable driving history does not disqualify a candidate from the position, but does prevent driving a vehicle for district business.
  • Ability to work varied schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work a rotating on-call schedule and during off-duty hours for emergency call-outs if required by the position.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted and perform frequent walking, bending, pushing, pulling, and kneeling.
  • Ability to maintain focus in moderate noise and with frequent interruptions, and to perform computer and office-equipment tasks requiring manual dexterity and sustained concentration.
